Hi all,

This may seem like a stupid question but what are the main visible differences between a turbo 1275 engine and a non aspirated 1275 engine?

Cheers matt

Actually the engine?

Well bugger all. The only thing is that it should have the oil drain plate bolted to the fuel pump aperture on the back of the block but this takes minutes to change and so could be bolted on any a+ series.........

Other than that you can check the head fairly easily by looking for larger diameter valve stems on the exhaust valves.

Lower comp pistons, higher capacity oil pump??

You can get away with a normal NA metro lump if you go about it in the right manner.

if you can get the engine number just type it into google or something and see what comes up. i did this with my engine number as i couldnt find it anywhere.

turbo dave did a post somewhere on here i think of how to roughly measure the dish size in the top of the piston this should tell you if there turbo pistons.

to be honest id be worried about the condition of the crank and bearings etc rather than if its a turbo engine or not?*smiley*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Not very sunny swanage

if it hasnt got a head cant you just look and see if the codes on the pistons are turbo ones? i could be wtong but if they are stamped then it would be easy....

I think the code is 12HD25 and this was unique to the turbo (???)

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

All turbo heads are different, sodium cooled exh valves mean a bigger stem which is easily visable under the rockers!

Early turbo engines are different...

The Crank is often a CAM 6232 which is the as any other 1275 (bar old stuff). But some have "turbo" cranks CAM 6581 - much harder, and longer lasting.

Early blocks with WFM1024 on the back (IIRC) have different main bearing compair to other 1275s - the bottom half bearing shell is solid. After 1992 all 1275s adopted this thou and the part number moved to the front.

Early blocks are commonly linered as well for some reason!

Piston wise.. the majoprity I have seen are 20831s but there are some funny 4 ring low comp ones and later 20353 (IIRC).

Any use?

Alex - I'm sure all A+ 1275 went to the 'turbo' bearing arrangement sometime between 87 and 89...
I've yet to see a linered block - but I know what my next anvil will be made from when i do find one!!!

When i was last down MED there was a heavily modded Linered block. I asked WHY???

They said they recomended the owner to get a "real" block to moddify, but he insisted on them modding the linered block for him.

Some people........i wonder if he uses this site, it was for a turbo install

What is the problem with liners on the A-series? After all, all modern engines got them. They wear better, transfer heat better. I cannot see one single bad thing with liners apart form they cannot be
bored so much.

I will soon be fitting liners in a 74mm S-block which will be used for racing.

How can heat transfer be better Vegard?

You might be right dave, I cant be sure on dates! I thought it was 92, but it could be earlier!

As for linered blocks... I have 3! BL had a problem with boring for a couple of years and nearly ALL 1275s where linered at that point as part of the rework - according to people who use to work there...

The truth is out there...

Because the lines are made of proper material that's why, not the crap metal that A+ blocks are made of.

but they need to transfer the heat to the "crap" A-series block anyway... and two machined surfaces do not transfer heat well!!!!

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

my 89 block had the turbo stylee bearings in (it was nat asp)

reading retro cars this months it says the turbo head had improved cooling passages in the head (obviously this isnt externally visible) could this be the main difference between turbo and normal heads??
