hi chaps
recently got my new sccr gearbox and have come to fit my pinion. i have searched through several posts saying to clamp box down, using a car......clamps....etc.

but i couldnt find anything on how to stop the gears from rotating while tightening the nut??

so what is the best way to do this as i dont really fancy wedging something in between my new gears?????

thanks

Or 1st and 4th.

Whichever, you need to disengage the interlock mechaism first (for obvious reasons) and re-asseble it after the nut is torqued and locked.

I have read that you should engage 1st and 4th as apparently you can brake stuff in 2nd and 4th.

i dont belive it persoinally, but it still makes me use 1st and 4th!

you need to whip the diff out, and twist the shaft so it's not engaged into the selectors, you can then tap gears to get it into 2 gears at once

It's been a few years since I touched a box, oh er misses, but I think there's a little ball & spring held in by one of the diff side plates that you might need to remove. However it's been a while so I'm sure someone will correct me if I've got it wrong.

Removing the diff side plate that holds the ball/spring in will allow you to pull the interlock sleeve out and hence disengage the interrlock, BUT, if the diff is still in, it's really difficult to see what you are doing.

Best done with the diff out (in which case the sleeve will be out anyway) so you can see what you are doing...

You need to release the "barrel" by pulling the ball, plunger, and sleeve from behind the diff bearing side plate.

Once the barrel is free, you can disengage the selector end from the selector fork rods.

It really is best done with the diff out, apart from the fact you can't see what you are doing with the diff still in, I'm not sure if the barrel will slide back far enough with the diff still in....

haynes say 1st and 4th, but i read somewhere that someone, somewhere, once upon a time, knew someones brother who stripped 1st using this method.

ive used 2nd and 3rd a number of times with no probs, so...?

it's the only way todo it really, so you don't have many options.
