So, I want to know what peoples feelings are on taking a 1963 Mk1 mini and turning it into a turbocharged and fuel injected behemoth? I'm thinking 1430cc motor with a jack knight 6 speed transmission and a low geared ATB diff...

Depends on the car really. If it's had a hard life and isn't original then go for it.

Personally I would steer away from modifying rarer cars and the varients, stick to sheds and ordinary boring cars.

Personally, if it is a shed, and needs a major work, do it, but if its fairly original i would leave it be, and only do suttle mods that are easy to change back.

Thats just my opinion though.

1430cc engine really isnt going to be easy to turbo, as you need to get the cr right down.

Oh and can you still get JKD 6 speed box's? I thought a they only made a limited number?

Nothing wrong with that, it can be changed back to standard if required. It would be nice to do an up top turbo though to leave the bulkhead intact

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I would question the whole engine gearbox selection.

Turbo engines produce loads of torque so do not need six speed gearboxes or low diffs.

Look at the winning car from Sunday.

Right now it's just a shell, with a new front end needed. I have an original 997 cooper s motor with head(2 acutally) but the car itself is not a cooper s. Jack knight does make a 6 speed box still, but at a hefty price... I'm thinking six speed for high top speed. I don't want to make a drag car, I'm thinking club racing in the U.S. SCCA(sports car club of america). If I put low gears, 4-somethings, then I'll have good start off, and good top speed.

leeds/wakefield.

six speed box is a waste of time, you'd be horrified when you calculated how much time you spend changing gears and not accelerating.

so it would be better to go with a sccr 4 speed then? Or what about minispares 5 speed?

check my mk1 in the link below for some ideas,

gearbox wise, either go for the minispares sccr gearkit, or if your feeling flush the swiftune and med dog kits seem to be very good from what i hear.

They never made a 997 Cooper S. It's either a 970 S, or a 997 Cooper. :)

Which one didn't have the mechanical pump machined into the block? One of the earlier blocks was machined flat where the mechanical pump would be.

I wouldn't recommend any 5 speed box for a turbo including the minispares one.

What sort of top speed are you after? once you know this then you can calculate the diff required to attain that speed.

Look at what diff is used by Jimster and Nic on this forum. Both have 120+ top speed ability and have no problem getting off the line.

In fact, too low a gear with decent power in a Mini is just a recipe for wheel spin!

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

ALL early blocks had the fuel pump "recess" but it wasn't drilled. Whatæs the bore of the block?

I haven't measured it. I know it's a small bore, as any of my small bore heads fit it perfectly. I'll get the number and some measurements tonight...

I'm looking for 100+ on the speed. I go on the freeway often, and this would be a weekend track killer, hopefully.

Ageed on this point but for me early mini shels are for restoring and later mini shels are for modifying. Its why I keep away from Mk1s.
