Do a compression test, first cold, then hot, then hot with a little bit of oil in through the spark plug holes - this will give you a good idea if the rings/bores are worn.

A leakdown test would be even better if you can borrow the equipment.

On a turbo motor though, the smoke could easily be the shaft seal(s) in the turbo itself. Pull the inlet duct off the compressor end and see if you can feel any play (radial or axial) on the shaft. If there is noticeable play it means the bearings are worn wich means there is a very good chance the seals have gone too.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

right done the compression test what i done was

remove main lead from coil, remove lead and spark plug 1 and fit tester and try start the engine it gets to a max of about 155 on all cylinders, is this normal? my 998 gets up to a little less.

each cylinder is the same but the 3rd one is slightly slower on the turbo engine

today i checked the pipe from carb side to front of carb and that is fine what else could it be?

Have you got a spare N/A manifold lying about?

I wouldn't advise running the engine in the car with no manifold at all, you may see flames instead of white smoke.........
