Unfortunately it is a gt2056V though. I just thought I would post up pics incase it is of interest to anyone. It's now time for me to learn how to read compressor maps so that I can see if it will suite my E30. If it does, I have no idea wheather to attempt to control the vanes or simply use an external wastegate

As you can tell, it doesn't look much like the normal GT2056

EDIT: How the fuck did I type an "r" instead of a "v"?

haha, it's too late. I already found out the hard way *frown* Thanks for trying to save me from my own over-enthusiasm though

I may do. I have been getting carried away and thinking of MS so it's not out of the question. The reason the turbo was replaced was due to a dead vane controller but I might pull it apart to see how it works

i believe fab was controlling one with a servo, and im sure someone on here has one with a wastegate and a ball-spring type boost controller??? but the name escapes me (sorry:( )

Fab and Joe are the only 2 I can think of. Joe is using an external wategate to control peak boost and an actuator to control the vanes at lower boost levels

I dont know how well that exh housing will limit boost on an E30, positive would be fine on a mini though.

control seems to be easy in my experience, use a weak twin port actuator to open the vanes under boost, with a MBC to up the boosit if yu need to.

set the low end boost thrshold with the vane stop on the turbo (limit how much they can shut)

use the other side of the actuator with a one way valve to open the vanes at part throttle.

and yes using just the vanes to control boost now.

I couldn't tell you to be honest. I haven't really been as obsessive as usual reading on here over the last 6 months or so which means I have fallen behind a fair bit

Thanks for that Joe. I must admit that I haven't done any research yet so that will help me get my head around what is required.

I took a few measurements today and I have more questions than before I started.

1. When measuring the inducer and exducer diameters do I measure at the narrowest and widest point of the compressor (or turbine) respectively?

2. Is the A in A/R measured at the flange or the cylindrical section of the housing before it changes to the flange shape?

Assuming I measured the inducer and exducer correctly then I have a compressor trim of 50, a turbine trim of 72 and a compressor A/R of .45. I don't know the turbine A/R yet

before going furter, you should check that the vane controller finger is outside form the block and not between turbine hsg and block, it will not clear enough to control the vanes. Then if it is right (but I don't think from your pics), check that oil feed is between 20° from straight up.
These late type vnt turbos cannot be rotated as older ones.
Then to control the vanes, don't woory,Joe's right:
you just need an actuator with suck and blow side, as an r5gtt one, make the actuator holder, and adjust the vanes screw to limit overboost, then spend some time to check the right actuator settings.
