Hi,

Yesterday when out and and about the mini developed a knocking noise which seemed to be coming from the front of the car, increasing in speed when the car got faster suggesting something with the wheel.

However, when i apply the brakes it stops instantly so I am thinking brake pads knocking.

What could be causing this?

Cheers

Jon

wheel bearing?

Also check the disk flange to disk bolts. mine had come loose on one wheel. the disk was flopping about until you pressed the brake pedals. *blush*

O.K.

I done a bit of investigation today and the knocking is coming from the front drivers side and it also knocks when simply pushing the car backwards and forward.

It is very strange, i just don't seem to be able to pin point the actual knock.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Take your wheel of and see what's got play/movement in it. Check that everything is as tight as it should be and that there are no obviously worn components.

Is it a knock or is it a metalic ding kind of noise? Quite often the tab's on the dust gaurds for the disks snap of and the gaurd moves about making a tinging noise as it hits stuff.

Hi

I can now make it do the same noise, almost a knock as the wheel rotates by pushing the car back and forward.

If i jack the car up is doesnt make the noise if i spin the wheel so i guess it needs to be under load.

Will re - torque all bolts 2mro and see what changes.

Thanks

Jon

Sounds like a wheel bearing or cv joint then. Either that or the castle nut on the end of the drive shaft.

Jack it up, wheel off and have a good tug on your drive shaft. In & out and up & down

Took the wheel off this morning and found the pressure plate on the back of the brake pads had slipped off one of them.

It was allowing it to move back and forwards.

Pushed this back on and took it for a drive and all was well.

Do you mean ther dust gaurd or the springy bit above the pads?

From your description it sounds more like a caliper was broken!

There is a plate on the back of he caliper which pushes against the pads.

This wasnt on one of the pads allowing it to move more freely back and forwards.
