been offered a sweet deal for an MPI which i am viewing on saturday.

i know the tanks need no modifying for turbo use, but out of curiosity how turboable is the engine ? just with it having mapped ignition etc etc, thoughts being to pop a set of mirage manifolds onboard and run lowish boost say 4 - 8psi ?

The standard ECU wouldnt cope so you would either have to do some experimental siamese port injection or drop back onto a carb and use something like megajolt for the ignition.

Problems then would be that you wouldn't be able to get it to pass the emissions etc.

Sounds like a headache recipe to me mate.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I'd be more concerned with the state of the shell on an MPi though

Actually Agreed!

When I had my 96 MPI it had.

New Lower Sills
New Door Step sill on drivers side
New A-Panels
New Wings
New Front Panel
Scuttle Panel Repairs
Rear Valance Repairs
Inner Wing Repairs
And is it the a-post where the door fastens to had to be chopped out and replaced?
Also to boot the door skins were shite!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I think its easyer to ditch all the ecu, injection etc and put a carb and mj on.

Quite easyly do-able and nice to a later mini, see steve to get some taken out of the head though to get the cr down.

Shouldn't be a problem getting it through an MOT emissions wise if you're friendly enough with your MOT tester.

LOL,

i would think that you could transplant a mega squiert into a modded mpi ecu case, for low boost i think it woould work well.

then there is the issue with emisions......mind that said the turbo helps with this a wee bit.

James you can change the engine matey as long as the lump you put in dont come from a nicked car....

changing the lump is easy eniugh, but you have to piss around moving thre alternator or rad, due to the block.

Yeah, chaning the lump is fine...however, changing the engine number on the MPI lump to one that falls into a lower emmissions class isnt....

Again im not saying you should do this...

You could seriously consider Megasquirt and Jean's siamese code,,,, at least you won't have to build a completely new inlet manifold as some of us have done :)

You would have to modify the existing one anyway to put the turbo inlet on but at least the basics would be there, ie the injector ports.

And as Joe says, you could even put it all in the existing MEMS box.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

canny...i was hoping not to have to cut the bulkhead on it, basically the car will be run as stock and i will accumulate the bits needed to go on, then once i have em all the mod will begin. ( if the car is as described by my good pal......to be fair it should be as he is of the anal rust busting type mini owner)
