I have a 1998 cooper which has recently had a new engine put in it after the big ends went on the old one and I found a new engine at a good price. Now I have realsied what a mistake I have made 60bhp is not enough nowhere near especially after having a twin turbo 300zx! So now I have my old mpi engine sitting in the garage and I have decided I want to use that as a basis for a decent power output ie 120 or so bhp to start with the potential for more. So I am on here wondering if this engine could be used as a basis for a turbo conversion and if so what would need done to it and how much this would cost, would also considering boring and stroking it. Please help!

120 bhp is easily achieved, Few head mods, free exhaust, filter, cam, maybe intercooler, bleed valve.

Just go +20 thou on the rebore to 1293cc

In a nutshell..yes.

The block, crank, rods and head are well up for the job.

You will be looking to lower the CR with head chamber work and/or different piston.

Better quality stainless valves are reccomended to.

If you piston and rings are fine you might get away with just modding the head to get the desired CR.

All depends how much cash you want to throw at it.

Not sure how much wanting to spend but how much do u reckon it will cost? Out of interest tho there are two metro turbo engines on ebay finishing tonight, dont suppose u could have a look on ebay and advise me whether they look ok or not, appreciate its hard to say when u cant see engine in flesh or hear it run, and if they are worth bidding on cos might be easier on long run cos not sure if can convert the mpi engine to run on carbs or not. Cheers

You can't tell if an engine is anygood by looking at a piccy IMO. Not unless it was all sripped down.

Cost??

How long is piece of string?

Pistons ?100-?450
Cam ?50 and up
Head work ?depends who you go to(try morspeed)
Gasket sets?20
New bearings??
Modding bulkhead(diy or not??)
Downpipe ?50ish
Does the crank need a grind?

can't put a price on it realy at this stage until you find out exactly what you've got to start with.

You will find alot of stuff for sale on the site not at EBAY stupid prices.

Know that but basically wondering if for about ?400 I could get an engine with the turbo and evrything already there and running it might be a better bet to have that rebuilt than start from scratch? Will I need to extend the front of the mini to fit it or just cut a box in the bulkhead? Basically wondering if I kept existing head how far would I have to take it ie just port and polish or mega work ie stage 3 or so? Also how much are the turbos and intercoolers. Know how much it will cost for pistons etc and to get the crankshaft reground but it was really the turbo ancillaries I was wondering about

Arrh, you learn something every day. So unless dizzy less i you ignition was used you would have to source a suitable block at very least. This would cut into your ?400 budget.

to be honest ?400 is realy not going to get you too far if you want it done nicely IMO.

You'll never pass the emissions test on a 1998 engine with the carb setup, i wouldn't think ?
You need to get an older engine so the emissions aren't as strict.

yep thats the other problem, needs to be an older 1275 block, unless you just swap engine numbers :)

dont forget the oil filter housing is in a different place aswell dude, the filter sticks horizontally out of the block above where the dizzy hole was.
