Who uses a filter before the pump? I have just taken the strainer out of my tank and took it off to hopefully solve my fuel problems(metro turbo) but I need something to replace it and am not sure if I can use a filter instead.

What filters are you using. I have a focus one after the pump but the inlet/outlet is too small to use before the pump

I do, and as the filter is before the pump they don't have to be pressure safe. And paper or replacemnt one will do, i use 2 to get the flow right.

All efi pumps must use some form of pre-filter. But be very careful not to fit anything that will restrict flow. It will cause the pump to cavitate and make all sorts of weird noises, as well as interupting the fuel supply.

Although reading someone supplies a pump with an 8mm line, Im amazed that isnt happening already ??

Most modern in tank cars, have a gauze filter attached to the pump. externally mounted pumps tend to have a gauze mounted on the pickup pipe itself.

I used an 8mm on quite a few cars but use 10mm now. i was quite a game getting the hose over the pump inlet though!!

I had an issue with the foam breaking down in my tank and blocking the filter so ended up running without one.

Another thing, make sure you strap your pump down, i broke the magnets in one with it bouncing up and down on the return road at york!

i know what steve is saying though, the pump inlet is actually 10mm diameter.

My latest setup uses -6 feed and returns with -8 to the pump inlet.

I use one of these filters before the pump on my sierra they are very large/free flowing and the tails that come with it are nice and big, 15mm OD, but others are available if that is too big.

The old Porches used a big pre-filter. You can get them on ebay, although think they had threaded fittings.

Some 3-4" diameter

I had problems with cavitation on mine with anything less than a 10mm feed. Even at that, I did fit some long hose and a glass inline filter at 10mm after a pump failed due to dirt ingress leaving me stranded one day.

With the long hose and glass filter ( looked nice, but obviously flowed crap ), and the pump went nuts, I had all sorts of running problems due to lack of fuel.

I then modified the pickup in the tank with a solid 12mm pipe with a gauze on the end in tank ( stolen from a Cav SRI fuel tnak lol ) to feed the pump which solved all my fuel supply problems.

Dont forget, any pre-filter is going to need to be capable of flowing some 180-200litres per hour in most cases without restricting the pump itself.

If it was after the pump it wouldnt be a big deal, but before, its important it flows.

i origionaly didnt use a filter and removed the strianer from the tank as many people seem to do, i then killed about 3 pumps in as many months *hehe!*

i was using the lucas/bosh pumps and when i stripped them down they had all broken the 5 pins on the plastic coupling thet transferes drive from the motor to the pump unit, i used a jag xjs fillter but any non specific big canister fillter would do.
i run a golf gti type pump now and ive had no problems *Idea*
