i know its not related to a mini but i tried a specialist vw forum and all there interested in is shiney stuff like wheels!

i've got a VW lupo gti 5 speed (yeh i know the later ones had 6 speed) gear selection feels fine, not notchy, doesnt wine but sometimes i put it in 3rd, lift the clutch only to find it didnt actually go in gear, dip the clutch again, push the lever 1mm further (in wont go any further and doesnt feel like it should go further) and its in gear. its like its gone past the syncro but not into gear, and like the lever needs to go further forward. and it seems to do it mainly when its wormed up.

has anyone had anything similar?

my plan is to change the gearbox oil as its cheaper than a new box, then maybe look at the gear linkage. last resort is to change the box!

edited bit. the specialist site i mentioned is clublupo and nic would be especially interested to know they have a section/thread like our sister section but called women of club lupo, plus its over 200 pages of topic!

sounds like it could posibly be your gear selector cables. there is a how to thread on club lupo I found the other day.

I rebuilt my 6 speed box about 2000 miles ago. they aren't too complicated if it is your syncros. admitedly I've got this sort of problem in first gear on mine but just left it as I was more worried about 6th gear having no teeth!

i didnt know if it was cable or a rod system but it does seem that there is more throw going to 2nd, and 4th than there is for 1st, 3rd and 5th

I had a mk1 golf (now the design hasn't really changed with their gearbox linkages), although they still make the mk1 over here.
I had the same problem with 1st/2nd. What was, was that the spline shaft and clamp on the gear selector had shifted slightly(1/2-1mm in rotation) and it was this that was causing all the trouble.
Hope you get it sorted

EDIT* this is for a rod system, but if its a cable. In principle it could be a similar problem. ie adjustment

it's cable change, and they are known to need adjusting.
