Hey,

I took my car back to the garage that i previosly went too for M.O.T, it passed this time, as i had changes the lights.

But they did say the emissions where way too high, it was something like 12.72% co2, so they turned the mixture screw until it was showing 3% ish.

Before taking it to the M.O.T though, my dad said he was going to try and get the timing as near right as he could without a strobe, and adjust the mixture slightly as it was running way rich, and everytime i touch the throttle whilst driving it would splutter. I came across a post about dashpot oil, a populur choice was 3 in 1 oil, so i went out, got some, and put it in my dashpot, then as it was at idle and we where reseting the mixture, all the way in then 1 1/2 turns out...

as my dad screwed it all the way in, white smoke started billowing out the rear, i thought turbo seals gone, so we pushed it down the drive and shut it off.

Came to it 5 min later, and nothing no smoke, fine. We where boggled, we thought that if it was the turbo it would smoke all the time? then i thought, maybe too much oil in dashpot? i filled it to about the plungers length from the top. So maybe it sucked in some oil from there?

Anyway my real problem at the moment, that i could do with some help on, is that after they leaned of the mixture to get it to 3% at the M.O.T, as i was driving away, i thought i would put my foot down to see if that has solved my bogging problem, it took off and seemed well, i was amazed at the power!

About 50 Metres down the road, it started trying to cut out wenever i touched the throttle, it would rev fine with the clutch in, its just under load it seems, im trying to get hold of a timing light, to rule this out, also a fuel pressure metre as wen i pulled over(Broke Down) looked in the bonnet, i noticed the locking nut on the pressure reg was loose, finger tightened it the managed to get home, only 5 min away, i found that at high reves it was ok.

Any Ideas.

thanks sam

You've probably answered your own question Sam but it does sound like timing or fuel pressure so you're on the right track by starting with those two.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Good to here it's got the MOT...

Next, do some proper testing of things, this will mean begging, stealing or borrowing a timing light and a fuel pressure gauge (obviously I don't approve of option 2, it's just a phrase....)

You need to make sure they are correct first, and only then start looking for things like air leaks, some of the small hoses not on right etc...

EDIT - Ooops, just saw Richard said exactly the same....
