hi, picked a gearbox up but the main bearing on the main shaft on the drop gear end of the box has a broken race.

is it possible to remove this with the circlip pliers and puller and change the end bearing with the gearset still in place? many thanks

you'll need to take the laygear out, and pull the firts motion shaft, but the mainshaft can stay in place.

Mini13, I think he is talking about the first motion shaft bearing, so yes you can just pull the first motion shaft, but you will still need to lock the box to remove the input gear retaining nut

Or

is he talking about the first motion shaft support bearing (nose bearing)???....

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

good point, for got about locking the gearset, sooo the right hand plate on the diff housing needs to come off to lock the box up.

but yes if its the one right on the end that can just be pulled off.

Drop gear? you mean the input gear?

This is the sequence of drive, excluding fourth and reverse, for all the pedantics out there *tongue*

primary gear
idler gear
input gear
first motion shaft
second motion shaft (laygear)
third motion shaft (main shaft)
pinion
crownwheel (differential)

So the bearing sandwiched between the input gear and the first motion shaft, BIG circlip and it sits in the gear case itself?

Yes, you can pull the first motion shaft and change the bearing, but you WILL have to lock the box in some fashion to get the nut off.
