Hi

I am going to be replacing my mechanical fan with an electric one.

I was looking at the kenlow one on minispares but after searching on here I have heard one from a scrapyard would do the job.

I dont mind fiddling to get it to fit, but from which car would i get one.

Also should i be looking for it to sit inside the rad (engine side) or outside the inner wing?

I also would need to wire in a thermometer, do these usually come with the fans?

Thanks

Jon

I bought my fan from ebay. I think its a kenlow and was about £40, its a 9" fan (same as MPI use). More than up to the job and verycompact. *wink*

I had a metro rad on my old clubman with a 9" kenlowe jap copy running from the standard metro switch. worked a treat.

Hi

Thank yo for the replies, you think it would be best to get something like that as apposed to a scrappy job.

Would it get mounted to the outside of the inner wing, or on the engine side of the rad?

Thanks

Jon

They generally sell two different versions suck or blow, so you can either mount it from the front or the rear. *wink* lol

the fan switch you talk of, i assume you mean something like this?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-LUCAS-RADIATOR-F...id=p3286.c0.m14

where do you fit it?

Something like that yes. The metro rad has a hole in one end of it with a clip to hold it in.

The switch basicaly completes the circuit when reaches the temp the fan needs to cut in. mine was between the fan and earth.

are you getting rid of the normal fan? if so im not sure JUST an electric 9" fan would be upto the job seeing as they arnt designed for constant use, only for a quick burst of cool air, usually rads are mounted on the front of cars so they get the cool air going through them, if you notice the electic fans only come on when in traffic etc.... so unless its a front mounted rad then i would not suggest getting rid of the normal fan aswell :)

I was going too, but then i got an ear full! So i decided to go for the 4 blade and not have the electric one and mines fine on heat :)

Keith Timpson is running an electric fan without the original fan with no problems. There should be sufficient flow through the rad when driving, even on a side mount.

I'm sure there is something written in stone somewhere that the original fan wasn't actually doing anything much above a certain speed anyway

I'm with Johnny here - an electric fan will not be enough. The mechanical one is there for reason and that is the cooling is not enough without one. If your car cools okay without one it hasn't got enough power!

Depends on the fan, some suck, some blow.

Some suck and blow, depending in which way the blade is fitted and the rotation is reversed *happy*

if anything you want, good flow to the fan if its blowing so that its blowing cool air into the rad for better cooling since you wont have a normal fan... second if its sucking air it will over heat quite quickly in my opinion.. aparently the 9inch fans diddnt do squat for cooling on the Mpi`s?

Shropshire.

i have a front mounted rad and an electric fan mounted behind (so sucking) i have had it overheat once, on the way back from Avon, it was a really hot day and i was sitting in traffic. Other than that its been fine.

whether the fan is blowing or sucking should make no difference to the air it is moving through the radiator - noted on the position of the IC though. Look at the number of moderns with the fans mounted on the enginbe side of the front mounted rads- if the air is being pushed though the rad its going to counter-act with the air being pushed through from the forward motion of the car?

as for the MPi fans, well they were developed by Rover! I thought we were talking about using good quality aftermarket fans and likley only any good at idle when the car insn' moving to get airflow

just my understanding on the subject guys!

i tried running my old mini with an electric fan only (even though the plastic one never failed me with a 2 core rad) it didnt work after 1 week of driving i feared traffic like no man should fear traffic.....needless to say its in a box in the garage.

my now new to me old mini has one int he wing however its on a switch and the plastic fan-rad combo is not so good so i have to use the electric one sometimes.

My electric fan on the side rad with no mechanical fan works just fine, no issues in years. This is a full race n/a dont know if its enough for turbo motors though

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

If you put a lecy one under the wing you will need to make a bit of a shroud to seal off between the rad and the inner wing. I haven't done this on mine yet and I know I'm drawing a lot of air around the rad and not through it.

A fan to radiator cowling is definately mandatory. At least the fan affixed directly to the radiator, neccesitating some inner wing vent removal, sucking preferably into the low pressure innerwing.

Robgavin I think he is referring to (in relation to radiator) front mounted blowing or rear mounted sucking. Though blowing through is definately considered inferiour as no air flow will be present through the radiator where the motor obscures the fins.

I intend to buy an electric fan of german or japanese origin to ensure longivity..

Thanks, Hâr1o''.
