Right you knowledgeable bunch, i know that its recommended that you use ER100S.G wire to weld T45.

Is there any drastic reason that you cant use normal grade MIG wire to weld it?

I've done a few welds and its pooling and penetrating fine, but it seems to spit abit more than normal. I've tried more/less gas with no success. If the special grade wire is just going to spit less then i think i can deal without the extra cost of this stuff!

I'm at the point now where i can either carry on with the standard wire or get some of this super expensive special grade as im not just going to be welding up my rollcage, im going to have crossmembers/seat mounts, Radius arms, subframe and probably more.

Is it all going to end in disaster if i carry on with normal wire?

Thanks, James.

That's what i was thinking. But then i was also thinking its apparently higher in chrome and magnesium so might need to have the better grade wire.

I'll crack on with my fresh roll of normal wire then!!

Try the MIG on some normal steel.

If it still spits, it may be because the old wire has got a bit corroded if you have not used the MIG in a while.

Fresh wire Paul. Thinking about it, the tubes are a little greasy to the touch. I'll wipe down (no brake cleaner) the next area i weld and see.

Your wire speed too slow?

Hmm, it could be Jason. I haven't actually had a play with the feed. I'll crank it up abit this weekend if i get out there and see.

Thanks a few things to try.

Degrease the tubes, and it may even be worth given them a light emery with some paper by hand this will remove any scaling etc, this made the ease/cleaniness of welding my chromoly better and more consistant but i was using Tig and it is my preffered weapon of choice.
