I've been an idiot, i let the engine stand for about 18 months - 2 years......

now i have connected all up again, put a fresh battery in and turned the key.

all i get is a clunk??? at first a thought it was the starter (still might be) however it all looks ok. i'm confident i have the wiring sorted. so i thought the engine might be siezed (sp??) i took the plugs out (no idea if that helps!) and turned it over by hand via the driveshaft nut and a lot of effort! (in second gear)

It sort of turned over, but then when i tried it on the ignition i still got the same clunk, what the fook have i done wrong? i can take a picture if it will help.

Sounds alot like the solenoid on the starter is sticking.

Give it a tap with a hitting stick and try again.

Could be solenoid.
Pull the plugs out, put a little oil/diesel down the bore. Just in case rings are sticking to the bores.
Turn over by hand. If all is okay, put plugs back in. Thats what I normally do if an engine has been layed around for a long time.

is the engine earthed correctly?

earth is fine, i'll try 'tapping it' tomorrow.

How much oil are we talking? just a drop? and then do you leave it for a while? or turn it over by hand again?

should i try turning the starter with it out the car connected to a battery?

thanks all :)

Pull the plugs and stick a scroddy accross the terminals of the solenoid. If it turns then your solenoids dead!

not alot, say a teaspoon. Just in case rings are rusted to the bores. Then turn over by hand gently. If everything feels ok, turn over using the starter untill you have an oil pressure. Then stick plugs back in.
