I found this over on wired today and thought it would have some relevance here. I don't have a camera other than my phone so I always found it difficult to take high detail pics when trying to identify wear, cracks etc.

So when I got home today I pulled a lens out of an old broken PS2 (that I held onto for about 4 years as I knew it would come in useful some day :)) and mounted it in a piece of an old student ID. It literally took about 5 minutes to complete.

Here's my examples that I took without any practice or knowledge of how to take a proper photo.
