Through running the mini on the road and especially at santa pod, i noticed that the oil pressure was running off the scale on my smiths guage.
on idel (when warm) the pressure sits at 45-50psi. When reving high (6000-7500rpm) the oil pressure guage bounces like mad at 100psi, so have no idea what the actual pressure is!
Whilst on the rolling road, the car decided to blow the sump gasket, only about an inch at the front of the engine. Could this be due to the over pressure?

Any advice on safe pressures? and possible ideas on cures?

Thanks, Sam

first of all id try another known good gauge because 45-50 psi warm seems way to high and if it is topping out at about 100psi it sounds like your oil pressure release valve is either sticking or set too strong, the maximum oil pressure can be lowered with the oil release valve but the hot running temp cannot be lowered that is down to the internal clearances in stuff like the bearings and the flow rate of the oil pump

is it oil pressure releaf valve or oil pressure release valve? *happy*

the sump gasket is likely to be a coincidence or it not being bolted on tight enough as there should be little or no pressure in the sup or 'gearbox'

would you adam and eve it! ive just been looking at them. Another option i could i try if the pressure drops too low on idel, is an oil cooler or different oil. il try the guage first then go for an adjuster.

High oil pressure will not cause blown gaskets.

just thought that the pressure build up could have pushed the gasket. Oil does bubble out of the missing gasket.

when the engines running, crack off the union on the back of the guage, and bleed any trapped air out

this will cause your guage to bounce about

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i've never bled an oil pressure gauge yet.
sprint1380 (i've forgotten your name already, is it sam?)

i will give you some good sealant for the gearbox seal if i can find a spare tube when you get the hubs. its called wellseal and its awesome stuff for that join.

Its a pressure reducing valve. relief/ release valves are fitted to allow flow around an area or component liable to block. a pressure reducing or maintaining valve metres the flow to return to hold the pressure at a set value regardless of flow volume
