There is a video I want to save locally from a web page

http://www.zf.com/corporate/en/products/in...dualclutch.html.

How do I do this?

Download this link http://www.zf.com/media/media/en/multimedi...ngsgetriebe.flv

That's a direct link to the video, its based in a flash object but if you have flash player you can still watch it.

Dave, all I did was look at the page source, search for the term "swf" which stands for shockwave file (the standard flash format) then scan along the lines of the code till you see the video source.

You have to look carefully but it's there. I can submit a screenshot of where I found it in the source if you want, but it's not always the same as some embed proper video files in to a flash object on the site page instead.

OK, here's a step by step.

First of all, right click the web page and click to view it's source. Then hit ctrl + f to enable the search function so you can find the embedded code for the flash object. Here's what the search should turn up (with the line highlighted showing the embedded code segment so you can reocgnise it):

(if you are looking at a page with more than one video embedded on it, it might take a little longer to find the code piece you are looking for, but all the embedded objects should be listed on different lines any way)

Then, scroll along the line so that you can find it's source file in the segment of code. Once you have found it, it will look similar to this (this image is of the page you linked to):

Now, notice that it only provides part of a web address in the part I have highlighted. The code of the page will have all it's objects and images referenced like this because the base address of the website will always remain the same, so thats all you add in front of it, so:

/media/media/en/multimedia/corporate/products/7_speed_dual/7_doppelkupplungsgetriebe.flv

becomes

http://www.zf.com/media/media/en/multimedi...ngsgetriebe.flv

In this example it's an flv file which is a flash video file, but you can find all sorts of extensions, usually normal video encoding extensions like .avi or .mp4 which you can just download by saving the link, or clicking the link and viewing the video on it's own, as long as your browser supports video viewing but most do any way.

Hope this has helped.

Yes they are. DCT's are the only non-manual transmission I'd ever own.

No probs, any time.

Oh one thing I will add Dave, if the source video file is hosted on another site, then the full address will probably be in the code segment instead of the shortened version.

porn doesnt work usually, its embedded properly and as such dosnt make it easy to find the source :)

Tried and failed lol

Although some videos you can save, i use "avant" browser and if you just let yoru cursor hover over a video it will have a box popup with some functions, one of which is SAVE! :) make it easier than looking through codes

Well Johnny I wrote that guide so that you wouldnt have to change browser just to get at a video file *wink*

Yes, Firefox does have many plugins like Brett mentioned which pull videos off of web pages embedded or not, but not everyone uses Firefox either, even though it's a shame.

Yes it is also true that it doesnt always work because most clever bods have their sites construct a new flash object with the video built in to it, so you cant rob it, but it can be reveresed with the plugins like Brett mentioned.

Use Firefox all the time. The add in that you refer to is probably "Download Helper" works really well with YouTube and the like.

Having posted yesterday, I just checked out your link. It is definitely possible to download the video using DownloadHelper in Firefox. Hope that this helps...

The way that I would approach this is to download the flash video using Download Helper in Firefox. Once you have the FLV file you can run it through FLV Extract to get the Audio (MP3).

If you are having problems and want to post the YouTube link I can take a look for you.
