Force Racing ICT Dept Manager Miglia Turbo Am frum Yokshyer tha noes!

Right bit of a long shot i know, its looking like my head gaskets gone on the rolla, its pressurising the water system (havent had the sniffer on it) but its looking very probable.

Problem i have is not many garages will touch them as there vvti and need a special set of tools. Does anyone have these or know someone they can borrow them off? I dont need them yet but when push comes to shove im going to need these as it will save me a heap of cash!

Ive just bunged some rad weld type stuff in as someone mentioned they have done this in the past a temp fix!

Any help would be much apprieciated!

Not sure tbh, apparently you need the kit of tools to do it and they cost around £600, so most small garages wont have them!

It is probably worth while finding out what tools are in the kit, as if its cam / crank locking tools you can probably do without them, and save yourself a few quid *happy*

if its any use look for the same tools for the 111R elise - same engine, or see if you have any friendly local lotus specialists to tap up

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

As John K says find a specialist. If its anything like my Clio. You DO need the proper locking tooling. For both head and the crank. No marks on these modern engines and with the preloaded vvt system.

Its not worth the headache IMO.

In case you didn't know, Carl works at a Toyota main dealer. So I'd wait and see what he comes back with first of all.

didnt get chance today, pm me your chassis number and ill look on the electronic manual monday and see whats involved. tbh im not sure weve done any major engine work on them. lol

there will be no special tools needed for timing, toyota use dots, lines, coloured links on chain and wait for it they still use woodruff keys (unlike the nobs like ford and renault)lol.

you will need to take the timng chain cover off, timing chain off, the head bolts will probably be hidden under camshafts so theyl need to come out.

only bit i cant picture in me head is the "high lift" mechanism, will look monday

the garages you went to probably didnt wanna do the job.

had a look and you dont need any special tools.

the head bolt is just a spline socket. i think they have them in the large draper type sets that you get loads of bits in.
tappets are shims so make sure you keep them in the correct order, dont tip the head over with them in, they will fall out trust me lol. if you do mix them up youll have to fit camshafts measure gap remove camsafts mesure shims and refit. there is specil tool to do them in situ but only toyot garages have it i think.
timing chain is dots and coloured links.

timing cover is sealer not a gasket so make sure you remove all bolts before leavering off they do crack easier thn you think.

dont undo the vvti controller off the end of the camshaft if you can help it as when your tightening the bolt up you can damage the lock pin inside and your vvti wont work

i cant really say what type of job it is todo coz that depends on your ability. haynes would probably class it as a spanner 5 lol. but take your time and dont break anything the bits are expensive.

Right, i started stripping the engine down today, after removing the cam cover and turning the engine over (by hand until i saw the markings)

One question the Orange Marker doesnt line up with the dot on the pulley? Also what does the vvti controller look like? Is it the big drum thing on the end of the inlet cam?

youd have to be a very lucky chap to have them line up with the marks on the pullys. as you can see the marker is one link to the right, so long as all the other colored links are one link to the right of there respective markings then all is well. its cause the legnth of the chain isnt exactly devisable by the number of the teeth on the pully....

the couloured links line up about once every 600 turns iirc lol.

tbh there installation markings not timing markings.

yes the vvti controller is the fat gear, youll only get probs if you remove it off the camshaft.

the timing cover may be a gasket not sealer
