right, I sold a few bits on e-bay yesterday and I've now got a guy wanting my bank details to do a tranfer - he said he had to get rid of his account because he got his wallet stolen and can't use paypal. He (or she) also has no feedback.

I'm obviously apprehensive to give out certain details - any advice you can pass my way?

cheers

rob

It should be safe enough and you shouldn't need to give anymore than the sort code and account number. But I can understand your cautiousness!

However if he has a bank account to do a transfer then he can send a cheque - even if it costs him a couple of quid to get the bank to raise it for him.

There is very little someone can do with your sort code and account number except pay money into it.

You hand it out to anyone you send a cheque to anyway as it's printed on your cheques.

At least with a transfer you don't have to wait for a cheque to clear and PayPal aren't involved so can't reverse it if the buyer makes a claim.

If you're concerned though, postal order only - they can't bounce like a cheque which you would obviously want to wait to clear because of that possibility.

you can sign up to direct debits cant you? i would avoid personally, tell them to send a cheque.

Not sure, but can you still send a bill through paypal, so they don't have to be signed up but use it like any online card transaction?

That, as far as I'm aware, is the only possible mis-use of a sort code and account number.

But the banks are so well aware of it there are many protections in place, many more than there used to be.

For a start the DD has to be to another bank account so 100% traceable.

More importantly, as you will have found if you've ever tried to set a direct debit up recently, the receiving organisation wants a lot more than just the sort code and account number to prove identity. Electronic verification of my identity from my (new style) passport number has been the latest (it cross references passport address and name to bank account holders address and name) and prior to that it was certified copies of things like driving licence or actual utility bills.

And with a DD you're protected by the banking code - any unauthorised DD is immediately refundable - hence the extra measures the banking industry has gone to to protect this sort of scam.

So, personally, I don't worry about it - my sort code and account numbers are on at least 50 databases spread across various companies, banks etc and I personally think the chances of them being hacked into and the information trying to be mis-used is far greater than some lone individual mis-using it.

Statistically, you are more likely to have real fraud committed against you (assuming you bank online) by either responding to "phishing" emails or by not having a decent virus checker installed allowing your passwords etc to be monitored......

Just my view :)

cheers guys;

Rod, I do agree with you in principle and yes all the info I would give them is on a cheque they could legitimately recieve from me; its just all the little tihnigs not making sense like the account being closed because the wallet was stolen - usually they would just stop a card etc.

I'll ask for a postal order or offer to keep the item to allow his account to be re-activated I think

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i wouldnt worry as rod says. i mean if it doesnt come through in 5 days then you then know he's up to something. DD's come out after a fair while and are also sent to you in writing so you would always know.

i'd just send them. i am for all my miglia bits and have done for a long time. soooo much easier than having to go to the bank etc with cheques.

Best point of all..... and if your bank and his are BOTH part of this new FPS scheme - 1/2 the banks are so a 25% probability both of yours will be - you have the money securely in your account within 2 hours. If not, 3-5 days for it to be secure.

Even at 3-5 days, so much better than sodding around with cheques :)

cheers guys for the advice. the biggest issue was that he said he had closed his account because he had his wallet stolen so I'm not altogether sure how he was going to do a bank transfer anyway - if he could do a bank transfer, i've no idea why he couldn't do a paypal transfer.

anyway, he has now sent me a postal order so i'll wait and see

Most of the above is sensible, but I disagree with Rod as to what can be done with a sortcode and account number. This is essential information that a "phisher" seeks, in addition to other personal details So, although there are safeguards built in to the banking system that allow any normal, aware person to protect themselves, just make judgement call on someone who says he has no bank account, but can do a bank transfer and also bullshits about how he cant use PayPal because his wallet was stolen.
i spent over 30 years working for the banking system, including a fair spell on debt control and recovery so I do have a few ideas on how things can go wrong.
The guy in this instance obviously wanted the item, so came up with the (foolproof) postal order.
