Whilst having my MOT done yesterday the tester told me that they can now fail people for an exhaust system which is louder compared to a standard one.
My mini has a LCB and an RC40 which is louder than standard but by no means a Chavmobile exhaust. The tester couldn't find a '62 Austin Mini to compare mine to so no problem there then. *happy*

However, newer minis and pedantic Mot testers...... Has anybody fell foul of this yet??

You need to find a friendly MOT tester and keep on his good side *wink*

Never heard of that myself.....

I thought there wasnt actually a set noise level for an exhaust for MOT's or for the police... only that you could be picked up on it if someone complained about you for 'disturbing the piece'.

I could be wrong though.

"assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicle"

Testers discrestion then.

That said, I tested a '64 mini with a single box 1 7/8 exhaust that back fired like fook. Didn't fail for that though...

You can fail it for that. Its something like "exhaust emitts noise considerably louder than a standard car of similar model and age"

....something like that, cant remember exactly.

bit petty though?

Twin box plus cat or turbo I doubt you would have a problem.

Its a reword of a ruling that has always been. It just makes it easier for the monkeys to fail it on noise.

One of the lads at Manchester Minis had a fail item as excessively noisey, but it was a "2 single box system, which is indeed a little loud *hehe!*

There is acceptable and then there is loud, but i feel the monkeys will take it too far and fail everything that is a little sportier, just because they can.

On a side note, the Laguna broke down today, battery died without any warning, called AA to boost start the car, then had to take it to Kwikfit (leasing company choice, not mine). They are truely tyre monkeys of the highest order!!! All I heard was compaints. " why's it like that" (reffereing to the factory battery cable termination) "never seen that before" (must be thousands of LagunaII DCis out) there" how am I suposed to undo that" " why wont the cover go back on" (the battery is a different shape mate). Monkeys!! and they MOT test cars!!! I have to admit though, it was the fastest experience I hav e had at Kwikfit, well it was 5.30, they were all propping the counter up and the garage was empty.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

surely they will have to have a decibell tester to fail it??

I had my mini mot'd at kwik fit, he was going to fail me on on number plate light, hand brake, he said he had to put his foot on the brake to get it through after the third attempt and front light allignment.
He let me do all the work their, charged me £4 for a bulb and passed it. I could not argue and it cost me £40 all in *Clapping*

Sadly no....their ears are sufficient. Same with the cops.

This is one of their new campaigns, where cops are even threatening to steal cars off their owners for repeat offenders with regards to noise nuisance. Despite there being no proper legal limit on noise, nor do they have any actual test procedures to follow, or properly trained personell to carry out tests.

Just more anti-car BS that appears on a weekly basis.

NEW ZEALAND - moving to Australia

just thought id say over here in new zealand the wof and police are way over the top, the law over here used to be 96db i think now its gone down and its getting lower and lower every year, i used to cruze round in my 1275gt with twin 5inch bigbores with straight threw pipe on the back and every1 new i was coming and my wof guy was prity nice so neva court me out, but in saying that i also owned a 1992 mitsi evo had a 5inch bigbore and police halsed me all the time and it was legit, but over here they are cracking down on boi racers big time.

ACE article contains some info:
http://www.the-ace.org.uk/loud-exhausts-cost-cash.html

Think my Mini was well over 100db but inside the limit at sprint and hill climb events, it was a road legal modprod class. Been off the road since 2001 would have to think about the noise problem now to get it back on road again.

I dont really have any problems with noise. You can get pinged for it, but only if you get a really nowty cop or get pulled over by queensland transport. Then your near enough stuffed so you smile and say your just testing it.

The thing that tickles me and I am a motor bike owner, is that most bikes will drown out the majority of modified cars as standard so wheres the logic. Maddness I tell you!

Yea the ones round here all start off friendly enough until I ask them not to jack up my mini by the sills or floorplan which they do because theyre too lazy to find a jack low enough to go under the subframes.
