Hello all,

Just had a question about the HIF38. I'm going to turbo my 850cc, and I was wondering if anyone has used an HIF38 rather than the 44 with any success? Or if they think it can be done? is it possible to scavenge the turbo parts off the 44 carb to put onto the 38 carb? I'm thinking HIF38 because the 44 would put a lot of fuel into the little 850cc. Any thoughts?

Well if you think about it, what sort of bhp are you after. On an NA engine it's generally considered that the 44 is needed above something like 70bhp. A modest 850 turbo sould make this sort of power so the 44 should be fine.

I have always used the 44 on my 998 tuebos and had no problems getting the fuelling right.

With a turbo, the disadvantages of the larger carb are not so bad anyway, the important thing is getting the right turbo.

also as the carb has the moving piston, it acs as a smaller carb at smaller throttle openings, so it dosent mater as much if the carb is too big,

that said it is an iteresting thought, and worth trying IMO.

So, along that thinking a HIF38 would really only be good for under 100bhp? 70 Sounds about right for a well sorted turbo 850cc that hasn't really had to many other mods. What do you think would be the right turbo? I have a T25 right now that I'm going to rebuild. I chose it because it's smaller than the T3 so would hopefully not lag so bad.

Now, back to the carb... Basically what I'm going to do with my 850 eventually is try to get as much bhp out of it as humanly possible. Eventually go to EFI as well, but after I build the motor. Here's the general idea:
+.020 overbore(so I have multiple rebuilds), custom crank, rods and pistons from Crower(here in the U.S.) built to take high boost and high rpms, new cam(I'm thinking 276 at most), turbo oil pump, swiftune flywheel and clutch, 12G295 head with 1:3 ratio rockers, dry decked and a Jack knight 6 speed box.

Would the Hif44 still be able to cope until I go to EFI? I know people still use it on the 1380...

Oh, and as far as the turbo question, I'm going to use a mirage motorsports header, because I don't fancy cutting into my bulkhead.

I think something a bit smaller and more modern than the T25 would be better. GT15 may be more suitable, Garrett list three different sizes, one which I think will be spot on from memory.

HIF44 is the best solution, remember you'll need a metro turbo plenum to get it to work for a turbo (well it's not 100% necessary, but it's the easiest way by far).

I figured on the plenum. So a GT15 would be spot on? As for the HIF44, I'll go with that then. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be too much fuel. And i'm going to solve the timing by going to megasquirt for ignition untill I can get efi going.

The GT1548 is dimensionally the same as the R5 T2 - I think.
