Ive just bought a metro turbo lump less gearbox, am I right in thinking I can just use say an A+ 998 etc. gearbox, I will be rebuilding it with a minispares straightcut gear kit anyway, does it matter what gearbox I use?

Will a rebuilt 998 gearbox be just as reliable as say a rebuilt 1275 or turbo? I will be aiming for around 170-180 BHP

Thanks Matt

yep thats fine, the 998 should hopfully have less wear on the bits you will reuse like the layshaft, and main shaft.

the 998 drops are different to 1275 ones, but if your going to sc drops thats not an issue.

only thing to look out for is how many bolts hold the main bearing retainer on 3 or 4, the 3 bolt cases are stronger.

As above,

From the outside the earlier (weaker) casings with four bolts are marked DAM2886
The later, stronger ones, with only three bolts are marked DAM5626

It doesn't matter which size engine they were intended for, the DAM5626 casting is simply stronger.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

So the DAM2886 box is not a good way to go?

I'm going to go for the bimmer twinky turbo conversion on my old A-engine which has gearbox case number 22G1832.

I recently got my hands on a DAM2886 with the four bolts casing and a 3.2 diff, so probabaly a MG turbo gearbox.

I was planning to use my original gearbox with Swiftune LSD but I understood that the DAM2886 also contains close ratio gears? Unfortunately there's no partnumber on the laygear of the DAM2886 box but I really appreciate your advice.

Shall I just rebuild the A-box with the LSD, can I use some parts from the DAM2886 gears to make it close ratio (if it is a close ration box to start with of course)

THe A-box has the 3 bolts retainerplate so also stronger than a DAM2886 box?

Lot's of questions.....
