I mean real first aid, i.e. if someone was to colapse in front of you would you know what to do?

We were just talking about this in the office, and the amount of people that said 'i would shout you' was shocking!

as a result of their answers (some didn't even know how to stop a major bleed!) i am now going to run some lunchtime classes showing them the basics!

Oddly enough we were talking about this as well, with similar responses (me included). We also got onto the subject of the poison garden at Alnwick and how dangerous some plants in the garden can be.

I would say I know the basics, but generaly I'd just ring the wife. She's a nurse.

Your right it is. That is because the less you know, the less you have to remember!

When your in a situation that you are not used to, unless you are very cool under pressure, then your mind will be all over the place!

In those situations some people forget even the basics, so the less they know the less they need to remember (i.e DRABC will do in most situations)

i can be abit crap under pressure somtime, but as soon as it goes to first aid im fine, im ST john ambulance trained as a first aider, at my old work i delt with swarf in somones eye, bad cuts ect, one or two epeleptic fits over the years and dealing with my own injurys. no one really knows what to do anymore, when i broke my leg the supposid first aider wanted to move my leg about which would have resulted in me having pins through my leg.
i refused to do it at sains because the course you have to do is for 2 year olds they dont get proper training imo, i badly lacerated my fingers about 6 months ago and i was telling the first aider what to do...

We have a first aider here who has a scary reputation! She is known for chasing ambulances and arguing with ambulance crews over treatment.

Rightly or wrongly I refused to be treated her when I had chest pains at work and waited for the ambulance to arrive. (turned out I had pancreatitis)

never argue with them imo unless your trained to the same standard, a friend of my is a training to be a personal trainer, is a life guard and has qualifications of a ambulance crew person and bloody hell do they know more than just first aiders!

STCW95? I did mine last week! SO much fun!!

I know the basics of checking for breathing, cpr, recovery position etc.

But when it comes down to it id probably have a total mind freeze, especially if theres blood and guts involved.

i've done a few first aid courses and the st johns one was the best, i think the most important part is to keep calm and think first.

a bloke at work banged his head and there was quite a bit of blood, the receptionist almost screamed and was going "OMG, OMG" and that did nothing to settle the bloke who was bleeding all over the carpet. so much for her first aid training! i took a look and thought it looked quite bad but said "its not that bad, just a small cut, but better go to hospital as its a head injury" that calmed the bloke down, put a towel on the cut, took him to hospital and he had about 8 stiches

I always used to have an idea what to do, and more importantly what not to do. Until I had Lucy then my mummy-worry began. So a little group of us took a child and infant specific course recently :)

My company paid for mine Joey.

Was speaking to some of the others there, most of them joining super yachts etc!! (that means fit girls by the way)

I think they said it was £750 to do it off your own back.
