I'm doing some work on a van, which has got some surface rust in places, (around the windscreen which is bonded in). I will try and cut out as much as I can but I know there will be some I can't get out. Whats the best stopper/preenter to use these days??

What are't vans made of carbon fibre?

I use stuff I got from Machine Mart which seems to work but I know a few guys who swear by the POR stuff

I thought POR was a paint? I'm looking for something I can spray on top off.

Hammerite's "Kurust" or Jenolite.
Jenolite at the moment because it's 1/2 the price of the hammerite stuff.

Both are just phosphoric acid so convert the rust (iron oxide) to iron phosphate... and all modern cars are dipped in phosphate before painting !!!

The trick is to get all the loose scale and flakey bits off first as it can't get behind them.

I have used the Hamerite Krust, and while people told me it was shite, I found it did a great job, changing the fe2o3 into fe3o4 and also protecting the bare steel.

I had bare metal bits on the front end in 2007 which got a coating of this stuff and nothing else, 2007 was a VERY wet year, and the metal treated with it, did not rust. I was impressed.

Just dont get it on the paintwork where its not needed

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Whilst we (probably) both agree that phosphoric acid is the best solution, I'm going to have to disagree slightly with Sprocket over the result....

Phosphoric acid and hematite red rust goes like this,

Fe2O3 + 2H3Po4 -----> 2FePo4 + 3H2O

ie, rust into FePo4 (iron phosphate), not Fe3O4 (magnetite).

Ammonia is the usual chemical required for the magnetite conversion. Well it allways was in my past years in power generation when we wanted magnetite in the boiler tubes.....
