I have seen a few people here have bought hypatec pistons..... are they any good when used in turbo/supercharged applications.

I thinking of going doen the 1360/1380 supercharged route.

alot (well a few) on here rate the hypatec 's quite high, and my machine shop use them in some of there rebore kits, they rate the actual piston very highly but hate the rings they said there shite, and also said id be a fool to run any boost with them

i bought cast omegas, they are rated highly but cost 300quids

I've got them, the 73mm ones.
It will be a couple of weeks before they run in anger though, so far the engine has only been test run with no load.
The 73 and 73.5 are a very good design of pistion (oil drain holes instead of slots) and quite substantial at the crown - fortunate as I had to machine a fair bit out to get adequate dish volume (they are intended for high compression engines so come with a small dish).
The ring pack I got was a reputable make (Hastings) apparently used a lot for high performance applications in the USA, no absolute proof yet but a reasonable sign of quality was that evey gap was spot on when I tried them in the bores, not one needed adjusting.
I bought it all from Australia so maybe another make of rings is being sold over here.

However, only time will tell.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I got the 1098 +060 pistons with slots. The pistons seem of good quality but the oil cotrol ring (well, the bottom one, whatever that's called) was a bit ropey. There was a weird hexagonal part of it that confused me. I had no idea wheather or not I assembled that ring correctly

hhmmmmm still not sure if I should just bite the bullet and spalsh out a little more and go for cast omega pistons like a few others have recommended and tried and tested. Need it to be a fairly reliable daily drive for work.

I see that MED do them for £280 and minispeed something like £250+vat so not too bad. But I think MED have more selection of dishes and sizes

Well depending what prices I get back for MED for all the rebuild parts thats where I will be buying from them.

I am guessing that minispeed will be cheaper, going by piston prices but I will see. I guess the parts MED sell would maybe be of higher quality???
