Coming home last night after welding a new floor pan in for mot (which is tmw), I turned the boost on slightly for the first time and was well impressed with the perfromance.

However after just a few miles my whole windscreen covered in oil and the oil light came on. Lucky enough I had a can with me!

The oil is blowing out of the crankcase breather. I have the orignal filter closed off with a K&N type filter, the oil seems to real quick from it. HELP!!!!

Any ideas.....I need this baby mot tmw!!!!!

You could probably be gentle with it and get through the mot ok. Something must be either blocked to get that much crankcase compression or the rings are gone.

How many breathers has it got?

The engine has done less than 250 miles, never been used on any boost and everything in it is brand new including the rings. It has had no abuse.

It uses to have 2 breathers, both with K&N Filters and then i plummed the one beside the rad into the manifold.

How can i get this compression lowered!

have you got an oil pressure gauge? whats it showing?

isn't there a seal on the crankcase that coul be dodgy/not fitted right causing it to throw oil everywhere? i cant remember, only built one engine so far.

mine did the same though, the rings had gone so when it came on boost it threw oil out of any hole possible, breathers/dipstick etc.

Have you got the one way valve on the breather attached to the inlet manifold to stop the turbocharger pressuring the crank case? If you have not got it, or it is not working then when the turbo is off boost there will be a vacuum that will pull out of the breather as it should. However when you come on boost, this boost pressure will pressurise the crankcase and blow oil out of your other engine breather that happens to be open to atmosphere. Disconnect the breather you have connected to the manifold and see if things improve. If you have got a metro haynes manual have a look in here as there is quite a good diagram showing how the breather system works properly as fitted to a metro.

Edit- The other thing to remember is that with brand new rings you WILL get some crankcase pressure until they have bedded in properly when the engine is run in. However it should not be so bad to cause the symptoms you describe.

Tom u just hit the nail on the head!

The 1st time the car lost some oil through that breather was when we plummed the breather on the rad side in to the carb. No one way valve was used. The problem must have got a lot worse last night cause the boost was turned on for the 1st time.

I have 1 of those little red 1 way valves in the garage, often wondered why it was needed!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for your advice!

Paul.

i personally dont plumb them in, the oily gasses dont burn as well as petrol. So id rather have petrol/air in the cylinders rather than having oily gass taking up the space of air!!
