OK, so it's only the handbrake linkage cover, but this was brand new and from a reputable supplier when I fitted it this afternoon...

It split as soon as I pushed it over the linkage.

Just what can I expect from all the brand new rubber/neoprene/nitrile seals inside my braking system ????

Perhaps it was old stock, got brittle with age. Not good though.

You would expect more from genuine lockheed parts.

I've had that as well, I'm sure there's a thread about it somewhere, I think to meet environmetal standards they've had to change the recipe and the new stuff is no where near par.

All rubber parts are shite these days. Cracked and perished within weeks of being fitted.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Yes the quality of the latest bushes, gaiters etc are rubbish!! When we lost aspestos from friction materials for example you wouldn't really notice, We haven't they been able to reformulate rubber with any success? It's kinda important too! I don't know how this sort of shoddyness passes QC checks if we're all noticing.

Whos quality control? Rover is long gone and that is thew crux of the problem with most of the shite we are being fobbed off with

TBH, I don't think the Lockheed part of the moulding is genuine...

Just a Chinese type copy.

Not hard to do out there.

I doubt Lokheed would dare risk their Global reputation against crap like this.

Do Lockheed still make stuff in England under that name, as the part implies?

did a bit of work on a mates mini recently, we completely overhauled his shafts, balljoints, bearings etc 12 months ago, and looking under his car the other night, they are all falling apart already

the balljoint covers had the consistancy of marshmellow, they just disentegrated in your hand, and the steering gaiter is just shredded, and looks like it has been for some time

i guess we now need to check these 'perishables' every couple of months?

Good I'm not the only one getting shite quality rubber stuff... Well, bad for you *tongue*

I think I've heared a rumour that it's got to do with a reduction of certain rubber components by law (EU of c(o)urse...)!? Sulfur reduction...? Can't find anything on the web though...

But it's a real problem... :(

Back to my usual rant.....

Was about to fit the engine for (hopefully) the last time so checked over the driveshafts etc (before fitting the inner pot joints) and saw this,

hard to see in the photo but perished all the way around the CV boot next to the clip, and then saw this,

All parts less than 12 months old and fitted for less than 6 months and not yet seen any sort of service.....

Those droop stops are absolutely disgraceful!

I can only imagine how bad the bump stops of a similar material would look after a few whacks from the top arm when a car bottows out over a bump

For the suspension parts, yes...... and that's what I'll buy from now on, but what about things like CV boots, steering rack gaiters etc ???

A lot less choice there *frown*
