My experience is that second hand stainless valves are always worn on the stems. New ones are £8 a piece from Minispares. No brainer really.

Then go for new valves from Minispares as well. Or, you could be really trick and buy some Rimflos from Paul Ivey. They are almost the same price, a tenner IIRC, and have hardened stems so last forever. Great guy, great service! On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

For low revs and longevity, I'd DEFINITELY choose either standard backcut A+ valves or Rimflos. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

i wil stick to standard then as on tight budget. not sure the stainless valves will give me anything in way of performance. what is involved in back cutting standard valves? |

You need a lathe. A 30 degree angled backcut is applied to narrow the seat down. It's explained in Vizards book. |
