Has anyone taken a rwd a-series motor and thrown it into a mini? Pro's/Con's? I'm looking to put it into my '63(i've posted elsewhere about it, it's not worth restoring) and make a rwd 1/4 mile car out of it.

why not just put the engine in the back, rather than add all the extra weight of the transmission etc that the inline a series involves?

I could do that, but so has a lot of people. I have a big thing about originality and uniqueness. Hence my other mini that's going to recieve a turbo'd 850 lump. I'm just looking for input on a rwd set up, what people think would need to be changed to make it work, etc...

might be doable, but i reckon you would have to dry sump the engine if you want it to fit without a massive bonnet bulge....
And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers! |

Don't do that to a 63. Buy a Marina, turbocharge that. It'd be great! On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

There used to be a kit car that did exactly this years ago. But I can find no info on them now. Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

Would it be possible to tilt the engine 45 degs without drysumping it? Seen that on the supertricky japanese racer but unsure if it´s dry sumped? internationally known as "big" swede |

I would normally agree, don't do this to a '63, but it's not worth restoration, not with my other mini already in process. What's all included in dry sumping a car? I've done some preliminary measurements, I think with a little fiddling not too much has to be cut away. The main reason I'm considering it is because I've got a mate that has the engine/gearbox that is free to me. |

Dry sumping on an inline engine wont get you very far if you attach a gearbox.

I was just thinking about this and surely the inline A series is no higher than the transverse engine. Sure it will be a bit further forward, but not much. I don't see the point of the conversion myself. If you want something different put an LS1 in it. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

I'm trying to stay a-series. I know it sounds crazy, but I enjoy working on them, plus it scares the shit out of the muscle heads here in the U.S. when a little dinky car hauls ass past them. I just think that an a series is where I want to stay, I just want to see how a rwd one would play out in a mini. |

If it's not worth restoring it, why do you contemplate this? Bin it then, buy a Midget... On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

bin a mini? Why, sir, surely you must be joking. If I wanted a midget, I would join and/or start a turbomidgets.co.uk forum. As is, I want an only a-series powered mini that is rear wheel drive. |

no sain person would go to the effort of making a mini RWD and yet keep the A series engine, when there are so many more powerfull and reliable engines out there.

That's a lot of belts. So, again I pose the question, what's all involved in dry sumping? Get rid of the oil pan, or at least put a very shallow one on, and not have any fluid in it really? And would a oil pan really be to much lower than the gearbox in the mini currently? |

I just think it's a great idea, and if it doesn't work, or I get a large amount of cash from somewhere I might try something even more rash, such as a r33 awd conversion... But I've got a mate that's giving me the whole motor, gearbox, rear end set up off his old midget that he doesn't want anymore(no he doesn't have the car).
