A bit OT but as this is a well travelled forum, has anyone been to either?

Have a couple of questions for you if so!

yes been to both - LA is good fun the beaches, venice beach etc have a good buzz about them and the hollywood hills are fun - LA in the main is a dump though. San Diego is brilliant - has a really good feel to the place and is just great - this is the only other place in the world I would live apart from the UK - and I've seen my share of a lot of other countries, one of the major perks when I was global costdown engineer for Lotus!

The places up the coast from LA are special as well, Monterey and Carmel areas are cool.

San Franciso was alright but didn't really do it for me

If you have time I'd do as much of the coast North and South of LA as possible.

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

Cool........

Here are our plans for our honeymoon: Land at LAX, stay in LA for a week. Drive up to Vegas for 4 day. Drive down to San Diego for a week, then drive back to LAX and fly home.

My question is do i need a car for the weeks in LA and San Diego? both hotels are cheging $25 per night parking, add the fact that i'm only 23 means the cost of hiring is high.

My plan was to hire something 'nice' on the last day of LA drive to Vegas, do the Canyon etc in car, Drive down to San Diego and drop of the car on arrival, picking it up again on the last day to drive back to LAX.

Would this work, or would it suck without at car 24/7?

Just to add:

I'm watching Jamie Olivers tour of USA at the minute, and feel the best way to actually see America is to do it with the locals so to speak.

The car hire and parking would cost about $80 per day in these 2 places, so as long as taxi's/busses.trains/trams (do they have them?) are cheaper then i'm game!

save yourself some money saty outside of LA and catch the train in to the city you wont need a car cos there's no where to park and you'l go mad with all the idiots on the road,
i forget the name but you hire a car and leave it with the nearset depo and alot of those places have nice stuff for a little extra but last year when i was in La i couldnt get a mustang as i was only 24,
dont bother with san diego go up north to sisco, or even lake havasu....you'l like that , drag boats.....

Lived and worked out there for 2 years in the early 80s. What I liked about the LA area was that there was so much to do, anything you could imagine was nearby. What I didn't like about the LA area was that whatever you wanted to do, there were 2 million people there doing it ahead of you, and even though things were nearby it was an expedition to get there and back. If you were a left-handed Armenian volleyball player, there is probably a league you could join in LA. I would avoid the big commercialized touristy things, Disneyland and Universal and so forth. Try to hook up with a native that has similar interests/hobbies as you, they will know the good places and the shortcuts to get there. I miss the little mountains where I could just go exploring on my motorcycle, and great Mexican restaurants, and the In-And-Out burger joints too. Good place to drive a convertible, you can leave the top down for 10 months. If I was out there tomorrow with just a few hours to kill, not sure where I would visit first, probably the Petersen museum, maybe the coroner's office gift shop, maybe Randy's donut shop, maybe get in an audience of a TV show taping. Its la-la land, nothing is too weird.

I live in the LA area and work in San Diego....

Yes you will need a car the whole time you are here. Los Angeles is not a city that can be walked easily and the public transportation is not the best. There is a subway and there are trains but they don't often go to the places tourists want to visit. If you don't rent a car, you won't really save any money as you will be paying a ton for cab rides. If you do rent a car, do yourself a favor and find a hotel outside the downtown area. Stay in a place like Thousand Oaks where the hotels are a little bit cheaper and they will not have a parking charge. Downtown is only 20 minutes by car. Traffic is bad, but I don't think it's any worse than most other metro areas I've visited around the US and Europe (as long as you aren't intimidated by 12 lane wide freeways).

What do you mean by renting 'a nice car'? Nice cars (ie a sports car of some sort or a luxury car) are usually rented differently than normal cars and are only rented to people over the age of 25. They typically have a per diem charge plus often a mileage charge. Driving a -nice- car can be quite expensive when you are going to be doing a 500 mile round trip drive from LA to Vegas and back to LA. Just stick with a regular rental. The ride to Vegas won't be better in a fun car. That drive is all about desolate, open, dry desert scenery. The road itself isn't inspiring...the views are!

Oh, have fun! LA, San Diego, and Vegas are all pretty exciting places to visit!

San Diego is great, don't forget the Zoo.. Its Wonderful and you feel like you are in the forest with the beasties,

We stayed on Coranado and ferried across to the city a couple of days but to get to La Jolla,Old town Zoo etc cars the only way.
(its pronounced La hoya, luckily I found out before I opend my Gob!)

I found this website a great help when I went there a few years ago.. Much better that the official sites..

http://www.localwally.com/

Loads of ideas, I wish he did a site for every city I visited.
