..........."Turbochargers, best known for making cars go faster, are taking a lead in the race to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, according to motor industry officials.

Turbochargers offer the fastest response to global warming at a lower cost per vehicle than any other technology

about time some one officialy spotted this, its bloody obviouse. a smart roadster makes 80bananas stock from 700cc and 6 valves by using a t12, it also makes 55-75ish mpg.

that guy does seem like a muppet, if you asked him if VAG only sold its turbo cars to "boy racers" he'd backpedle like hell.

I think that you are missing the point.

When turbo-charged cars first came out in serious numbers they were very performance orientated machines and attracted the undesirable types like us. Hence they got a bad name and manufacturers shyed away from Turbos due to the image problem.

It has taken the steady increase in turbo-diesels to gain general acceptability of turbos in passenger cars and the image problem has eased considerably.

I'm surprised it has taken the manufacturers this long to wise up to what can be done with a small petrol engine and a turbo.

I think this is actualy refering to modern turbo diesels which run lean. Just look at the kgCO2/mile diesel compared to petrol and you can see where they are coming from

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

turbo's in dailly drivers are definately the way forward. the amount of torque that's available for a smallish engine size is stunning, and with fairly small turbo's, lag is a thing of the past.

my dailly is an A3 1.8T, making about 230bhp and 280lbft from a tiny turbo running 22psi, it spools up and hits a bar of boost by 2k, goes like the clappers, and can happily return 40mpg on a run and easily 32ish around town.

FI in general has to be the future, that new golf GT is a 1.4 supercharged and turbo'd petrol engine, making 168bhp!

*Rofl!* *Rofl!* *Rofl!* *Rofl!* *Rofl!*

for some reason the idea of an unpredictable handgrenade of an engine just popped into my head.

seriously though, i recon the main thing holding back seriously fuel efficient engines is the catalitic converter.
they dont like lean mixtures, so engines cant run super lean at part throttle cruies.
ford spent seriouse money building the cvh as a lean burn engine and the whole thing went to pot due the the government geting everyone to nail a cat to their engines.

we had a astra tdi in a while ago, it was bloody slow and wouldnt go over 50mph, on the rollers it made about 21bhp. turned out the actuator was siezed solid so no boost. what surprized me was it was a 1.2 tdi, i recon it shows what you can do with a turbo diesel engine if thay can use a engine this size. *surprised*

This is a very, very, very exciting engine for the USA. One step at a time and all that!
