I am expecting various answers to this thread so here goes.

Gino R32 has at some expense as some will know, put together a fresh build 1293 turbo engine using the Mirage manifold.

This has not been a happy birth and thus far life has been as far from ideal as you could want.

So answer me this. When you buy a set of pistons and rings for a common build of a classic engine are the pistons supplied with the rings fitted?

Is it usual to have say, rings for another brand of manufacturer say Mazda supplied as the rings for the pistons.

Have you ever had to do this:
After fitting your new pistons to your bored block you find them bar tight the supplier tells you that you have to cut them to fit!

Now I am no expert I grant you but every person asked raised an eyebrow at the last one.

His issue is that the engine is smoking all the time and from what he has told me its not a wisp he is seeing.

Oh and the supplier of all this joy

MINISPEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should expect to grind rings to fit in the bore..

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

For a modern metric size piston, yes - the 73mm Hypatecs I bought were supplied with 73mm Hastings rings. No doubt I could have bought another make of rings instead because the diameters and thickesses are "standard" metric. For the weird imperial bore sizes and variety of ring thicknesses of a normally bored/re-bored A series, I would have thought less likely, but if the rings came in a box clearly marked as the correct diameter and thicknesses, it wouldn't bother me.

No, because I allways put every single ring in the bore and measure their gaps (and adjust if necissary) before fitting them to the pistons. However, I would alway expect there to be a gap, maybe needing increasing slightly with a needle file, but not so bad as to need "cutting". Modern production tolerances are much better than they used to be, the Hastings ones were all spot on for the end gaps they recommended.

I'll ask my man tomorrow, and im sure he will have a good giggle about that one *hehe!* Wev'e had a few giggles recently *hehe!* (not at your expense *wink*)

Your last comment says it all. Some one somewhere else made the connection with company names. Anything ending in 'speed' should be avoided

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
