Hi everyone,

I know there are some good sprayers on here so just after a bit of advice.Im just mulling over spraying a car myself as i hate paying other people to do things i could do myself.First time i will be doing this so any advice is welcome.

Can anyone recommend a decent compressor and spray gun for me to do some spraying work at home.I dont mind paying decent money for decent gear but its not like im going to be using it all the time so dont want to go too mad.

Part of the job will be to spray the cage inside the car which i know will be a bit of a nightmare, would i be better off with a suction fed gun for this due to all the awkward angles or would a gravity fed gun cope ok?

Cheers Ross.

can't you just rent one for the time you need it for?
that said you'l not regret it if you buy a good'un as you use it time after time....

p.s leave the interior as it is, mig's look cool in the gunmetal gery...

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Like you say its something i will use again over time so id rather buy than hire.Plus that way i can do it at my leisure.

Dont worry the interior will be staying dark grey as i think it looks great. It just needs a tidy up for surface rust and scratches.

I bought one of these and have been pleased with it. Big enough to keep the spray gun fed and useful for air tools although it struggles with a dual action sander.

A belt drive one would be better, but another couple of hundred quid more.

I've been using this for the last seven years http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/...-air-compressor (well the date code on it says 02...)

Pricey nowadays, but large capacity and has been totally reliable apart from a head gasket failure earlier this year, and that was only about £15 for a full gasket set.

The large capacity (both cfm and receiver size) means I never run out of air.

I use air for lots of things other than spraying.

DA is worse, die grinder second worst, so it pays me to have a large compressor.

Just my opinion.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I like DeVilbiss guns, JGA for big stuff, SRI for smaller stuff but then I'm a tart and I've seen some ever impressive results from considerably cheaper guns.

HVLP uses a lot more air than a normal gun, so bear this in mind when choosing your gun(s) and compressor

Ross,

Without sounding a twat, you've got a very good shell there please dont scrimp on having it painted.

It wouldnt take loads to make it mint, but am far from convinced that you could make a good job of it buying a cheap gun painting 2k in a garage.

Well fuck me,thats taken the wind right out of my sails! *hehe!*

No offence taken at all, appreciate the honesty.

I can live with the outside as the colour scheme has really grown on me and it cleaned up pretty well with a good clean & polish (although i would need to paint up a set of doors and a new bonnet to match so may just end up with the full car done).

The inside is my main problem,it has bits of surface rust and scratches dotted about - mostly on the floor as well as small bits of metalwork that need tidying up on the cage etc.I might just be being picky but if i just left these bits then it would bug the life out of me and i cant bring myself to just brush paint over them either on such a nice shell.Same story as well with the front bulkhead (hate being such a fussy git at times).

Just as a ballpark figure how much do you reckon i would be looking at for someone to prep and spray the inside?I know you need to see it really but just to give me an idea.

Cheers Ross.

Edit - Forgot to add thanks for the suggestions from everyone.

Ross,

Like you say it needs to be seen for a cost but tbh
its like anything it could cost anything from X to X for it doing.
You could spend a day to 3 prepping then there a pig to paing with all the bars.

If the inside was kept the same colour i would of thaught around £500.
Outside needs to be a grand minimum in my eyes.

In all honesty ive seen jobs done in home garages, some are shocking and some very good.
Its all up to you, an inverstment in a compressor and gun will be there for years to come i supose.

Alex - if that thing was in my garage i think i would have to hold my gut in just to get through the door - what a beast.

Rick - If £500 is somewhere around the mark for the interior then im more inclined to go for having it done properly as i its actually a bit less than i had planned on spending on the gear.I had another look at it today and i think painting the cage is probably beyond me if im being honest.

For the outside i thought a grand or so would be around the mark but nice to know im not miles off with that.

Thanks for your advice,much appreciated.Ross.
