Has anybody ever reversed a water pump?

What I was thinking about doing is pulling off the impellor and make an impellor that has the vanes pointed in the other direction.

Why?
Because I am fitting a supercharger (VMAX style but with IC). Using a normal waterpump I would need an extra tensioner/reversing wheel on the distribution cover.
When I can reverse the waterpump I can run the belt under the waterpump pulley then directly to the SC.

Was just curious if anyone has ever done this; in theory it should work or does the shape of the pump and cavity in the block only allow for original impellor shape?

Why not do away with the pump, use an electric one and a belt tensioner on the blanking plate for the oe pump

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Id say an electric one as well. Or better have two in series and put them in a better position.

Paul, thanks for your reaction.
I have been thinking and reading about that.
Cost is primairy thing, might be able to source a second hand one but then also have to buy (or make) a controler.
and still have to fabricate a tensioner.
Might as well use normal pump and make a tensioner on the distr. cover.:)

To keep options open, what are you using? I have seen posts about using secundairy pumps out of Merc, Renault, VW VR6. I've also seen some interesting plumbing, I guess that is because of using water cooled turbos?

I will be using a Meziere WP136 pump and davis craig controller with a non water cooled turbo. I ordered the hoses yesterday so hopefully I will have some progress to show soon

Paul, doing searching and reading I found you use a Bosch pump which is originally a secundairy pump in the system for many cars.
I don't know what engine specs you are running. my 1293 SC engine will not be extreme (something like 10 psi with IC)
Will the Bosch cope?

Gary, what does does the controller actually do?
Does it increase pump rpm on at a certain temperatures or something like that?

As far as I remember the Bosch pupm was only 18l/min. Nobody has any data as to what sort of flow a mini needs so it would be a gamble on your part to just use the Bosch one. The Meziere Matty started using (and I copied) flows 78l/min.

The pump controller maintains a constant temperature by varying pupm speed. Just set the potentiometer until you get a temp you're happy with

Any info on the leccy pump Paul is using, is this the Bosch I was refering to?
Any other electric pump users?

Herefordshire

I tried using the bosch one that is very similar (i think the same) and it wasnt up to the job

There is one the Turbodave can get hold of that will be up for the job, or the meziere will deffo do it (if you can fit it in)

you don't really need to use a controller for an electric pump if you retain your thermostat

Don't electric waterpumps hate big flow restrictions like conventional thermostats? I remember reading (I think it was Colin that said) capillary thermostats should be used, whatever they are *oh well*

I had another look at the geometries of pump and block.
It seems these won't allow me to reverse pump with modded impellor.

Cost wise probably will fit a tensioner.

But I will still be watching the elec pump thread in section help needed.

what about 2 or 3 of the auxiluary bosch pumps? i'v used a few in chargecooler installs wiht good success and there very reliable and dont draw much power, if flow is the issue rather than pressure, this is a solution, as well as offering multiple redundancy should one fail *wink*

A single Meziere pump and thermostat like this will sort all your problems out. *wink*
