Just noticed the alternator is really noisy, but only when I put the lights on. The noise is quite hard to describe, like faster higher pitched version of noisy tappets.

It's charging ok, even under load. Is it on its way out?

Cheers

Maybe - wouldn't it make a noise all the time if the bearings where worn?

Could be the tensioner bearing, alternator bearings or water pump. The normal noise that these bearings make is a whine that increases pitch with rpm.

I have had an alternator that made a sort of cracking noise easily heard at idle. That was a rebuilt unit and it started doing it shortly after I fitted it. Needless to say I wont be going back to that place.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
