Just noticed the alternator is really noisy, but only when I put the lights on. The noise is quite hard to describe, like faster higher pitched version of noisy tappets.

Maybe - wouldn't it make a noise all the time if the bearings where worn? |

it would but more noticeable with load on it like lights on etc love that straight cut scream!!!

Could be the tensioner bearing, alternator bearings or water pump. The normal noise that these bearings make is a whine that increases pitch with rpm.
