ok we are losing light here in Newcastle, my mates Mk2 1800 8v golf is being a bitch, i have noticed that the timing appears to be 180 deg out. can anyone confirm which piston is number one ? is it as per the mini 1 + 4 (each end of the block) and 2+3 in the center ? when the outer pair of pistons are at tdc the cam pulley and rotor arm are 180 deg out....

Sounds like when you are timing it up you are timing it up on Number 4.
