Hello
can anyone put some pictures up of mini with light beem axels with handbrake cables fitted, as I have a light beem axel but have a hydrolick handbrake, when I first had it moted it passed flying colours but now they want to see cables on it, not that they will do anythink, the normal sub frame has half moon runners they run in but do not have these with the axel
cheers

Not sure what you could do with the whole cables and hydrolick handbrake. But on my beam i used 2 kad handbrake quadrants

Unless you have a very very! early shell, then you require a mechanical hand brake.

Put the quadrants on then?

you dont need a mechanical handbreak as long as you can lock your hydrolic on in position, if you cant it will fail.

my 05 passat had a hydraulic handbrake so don't see why a mini can't have one

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

for an mot you need one independent of the braking system. So locking the line will still be illegal

The handbrake needs to operate mechanically.

You can have a hydraulic system that pushes a cam lobe into place inside the caliper to lock the piston off. This is somewhat how the Passat will be done.

So yes, purely hydraulic handbrake shouldnt pass an MOT and simply adding some cables should fail aswell.

To add to this, i don`t know about you lads but i do not fancy keeping my rear brakes under pressure for long periods of time. Seals and what not!

i have always know if its a seperate line hydrolic handbreak and it can lock it is perfectly fine for an mot if its one that taps into the normal breaking system then i doubt that would be legal. if it were me i would fine a friendly mot man :)

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

One can be very painful if implemented correctly while the other can be very painful in other ways if not.

Read the part about hydraulic handbrakes.

Its all very simple. Its not allowed unless your shell is pre '68.

I've trawled through this before because im going for rear discs using Wilwood PS-1's and was going to use a hydraulic. Ended up finding a very clever solution if it will work.

Pictures are easy.

These show the setup on the van where I'm using KAD rear discs and calipers which have a spindle and internal cam which presses on the back of the piston. Yeah this is independant of the fluid system but I'm pretty sure you'll struggle to modify a pair of calipers if they dont have the mechanixal feature already fitted.

Wilwood are the only other ones off the shelf I've seen.

I've also seen Peugot 306 and Skoda Fabia calipers fitted which I think have cable operated parking brakes.

Making and then welding or bolting the normal centre cable runner from a subby to the beam is easy. Radius arm quadrants can also be used in the usual manner.

Reading the MoT regs is over to you.

Good luck.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.
