I am currently rebuilding an 1987 metro turbo.

I have just taken the pistons out and they all look like this.....



This is the first engine Ive fully rebuilt, but am I right in assuming the rings need replacing as there are carbon deposits below the rings?

Could I get away with using the same ones, or if not where is the cheapest place to get replacements. Im not after anything fancy as I am keeping everything pretty much standard as the wallet wont allow.

yes, the rings do need replacing. So do the pistons by the look of it...

hmmmm!

I've thrown away ones that look better than that. BUT the only way you can tell is to do some measuring of the pistons...

I'd have thought the detonation that has pitted the ring lands and halfway down the skirt would be enough to say they're bin fodder...

Measure the block as well. It doesn't matter whether the pistons are useable if the block needs a rebore.
