Is it a BOC or AP (Air Products) one ???

Both have their depots listed on the web.

If neither, you may have a problem, legislation has been tightened up a lot recently.

BTW, it's a cylinder.... bottles are what milk or beer comes in..... pressurised gas comes in cylinders *happy*

Well that's what the man at my BOC depot tells me (and anyone else) if they dare call it a bottle...

I assume from that, you are using CO2.

If it's a plain CO2 fire extinguisher cylinder (usually colour coded black to state plain CO2) then probably no additives. Pub gas CO2 on the other hand, does have additives.

But, TBH, if you want good welds, you need to use proper shield gas which is an Argon, CO2, O2 mix.
Usually known as Argoshield by BOC and (I think) Cougar by AP.

yes its co2 i use, my dads choice ive been welding on co2 for a good 4 years not had much problems i considered argoshield but the costs put me off, there is a yearly contract and then refills ontop i dont think i would use enough gas to make it worth while, is air products the same? charges wise

btw my fire extinguisher is black so i think its game on!! :)

edit, and breath!! *happy*

It's true the Argoshield (or pure argon for TIG) is expensive mainly because of the cylinder rental/lease.
A lot of it is the price of applying the legislation on the cylinder certification and routine testing. It's possible the CO2 ones you are using are of a small enough volume and low enough pressure to be exempt (the legislation works on stored energy so Pressure x Volume).
I use enough to make it economic to use the BOC stuff, in fact I've just increased the size of cylinders I use because they are way cheaper prorata on rental and refill.

And for Andy,

Some bottles of beer,
A cylinder of gas,
but no (cans of) Eurofizz.....

It's true then Rod, it's just southerners. My little brother moved from up North, down to Norwich, then Whymondham ( he never told me you could spit on specialist compnents workshop from his house *frown* ) and now Cambridge. He is a certified twiggy beer drinker.

He has me get his beer now. I can get 16 bottles of assorted badger beer for £14 *wink*

When I was using CO2 I used to get a fire extinguisher company to refill my (illegal) full size BOC Argoshield bottle with 60 lbs of CO2 at a VERY good rate. I did have to make an adapter so that they could couple their hoses to my cylinder.

Like I implied earlier, the legislation is getting better and the dodgy outlets closed down.

A large part of the BOC / AP prices is complying with the legislation.

People complain about "nanny state" and generally I agree but, in this case, I would rather see all the "illegal" cylinders off the street.

The amount of stored energy in a gas cylinder is frightening, and if it was acetelyne, doubley frightening...

People who use the "illegal" cylinders do it not only at their own risk, but at the risk of anyone nearby when they are being filled and transported.

i understand that there is a need to monitor and test the cylinders in circulation and that has to be payed for by the end user, untill today i thought it was all above board obviously not
if i can get an exchange now ill get that, explain to the dad about his cylinder and use this black cylinder i have already, i would like a tig next year so ill have no choice but to rent a cylinder untill then i will have to make doo :(
