Although on the face of it it's more expensive, using a Mirage manifold saves mods to the bulkhead.

There is nothing clever to turboing a 998 over any other mini, or any other car actually.

Get the CR right (you'll do this with the 295), choose the right turbo (R5 T2 is perfect) then properly fuel it with the right ignition advance.

You have the basics listed, but there's lots of other bits you need. Have a search round Phil's site www.turbo-mini.com as it's all there.

I don't see a way to do this properly without mapped ignition by the way, so budget for it.

hi there, is there any other types of t2 turbo you can use?
im finding it abit difficult to find any R5 ones out there?
or would you have to by the mirage kit with the T2 ?

The mirage kit is just a manifold and turbo elbow. You can fit T2s and T25s on them.

I think Nick had a T25 that was suitable for a 998, but I've never seen another. the A/Rs of the R5 one are compressor 0.48 and exhaust 0.35. any T2 with the same A/Rs (or very similar) should be fine.

I'm planning on using a GT15 on my next one, but not worked out the manifold yet.

yes, the 48 is essentially the same as the 5 GT one.

Don't they use a T2 flange? Surely a mirage or metro with adapter would do for a manifold

Do they, I'm sure the one my bro has is a 48 with a 3-bolt flange. I'll have to check.

If the 48 has a 4 bolt fitmant and it goes straight on a mirage then it's an obvious choice instead of the T2. they may be more plentiful too.

Yup T25 flange for the 48
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarre...48_466755_3.htm

It's the 44s that have the 3 bolt flanges. They also have lower A/Rs and trims

Ok, re-visited all the comp maps I have looked at. I couldn't find the T2 but safe to say it's similar to the GT1548.

Interestingly, for a road car the GT1544 looks great (which is what my brother has in his garage), this as you say has the 3-bolt flange.

If you wanted a bit more power, say over 120bananas, then the 48 would be better.

The 48 obviously has the advantage that it fits straight on the mirage (I guess), but you would still need to make your own elbow. whether mirage would just sell the manifold I don't know.

Of course, similar manifolds have been made by members on here and I'm sure that getting what you want ,made with the correct flange fitment wouldn't be impossible or over expensive.

May be slightly OT but I have been thinking about a high compression (between 9:1-9.4:1) 1098 with a GT1548 running around 8-10psi fairly tame cam like an SW5 etc. I reckon this would make a very tractable and economical motor. Much like your 998 Wil.
This was for a future clubby project if I ever get this car done.

You stole my idea *angry* . Seriously, that is exactly my engine other than the fact that I have a 44 instead of a 48

Do you have a full spec Gary? See how it compares with my thoughts.

I do. It;s been that long since I worked on it I might have forgotten though. Here goes:
1098 A+ block +0.060"
Zetec under-crown cooling jets
7cc Hypatecs
Benross 12G295
Garrett GT1544S
Custom exhaust and inlet manifolds
HIF44 turbo carb
9.2:1 CR
SW5-07 cam
10psi
Megajolt
Standard rockers
Nitrocarburised crank
2wd Cossie IC

Then I also plan on running it with my front mounted rad with electric pump etc. and straight cut box, lightweight flywheel and backplate.

We will be fitting it NA on Saturday

Sounds good. Fairly similar to my thoughts. I think I would want a helical box & drops.

I will be using helical drops but a straight cut box with a cross pin diff and 2.9FD

I was thinking 10" wheels and a 2.95 FD too.

Will be interesting to hear your review once you have it going.
