I see nothing there that makes me want to remove the wrap. Reduced life? OK with me.

Ive used it for about 6 years now without any probs, but since I took mine off to modify the manifold, I am questioning spending £40 odd to replace it now.

I seriously doubt it!

I reckon I'll give it a miss myself as long as my under bonnet temps are ok.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I think that it would be a bad idea to fit wrap to a thin wall exhaust header and little to be gained.

Wrapping a cast iron Metro turbo manifold will be fine. Also OK if the manifold is fabricated from thick wall tubing.

You have to balance the benefit of retaining the heat to help drive the turbine and lower under-bonnet temperatures with the potential to shorten the life of the engine. In theory.

true, i dont think i can fit it with a mirage,
but when it was on a metro manifold i only used it once,

and the steel gasket between the turbo and manifold went on the way to newquay, after only fitting the wrap the week before,
so maybe an old gasket on its way out and couldnt deal with the extra heat in the manifold,
ended up melting the wrap into some kind of glassy type stuff...lol

Thats what i got out of the article. Make the manifold thick and your pretty safe.
Another possibility for the cracking of the the thin walled manifolds is the creep from the vibrations of the engine.

I used it on my 8 port and it helped with the temps but the manifold is cracked in 2 places after 20k miles

The answer to a question thats been bugging me I was searching for!

The heat has to go somewhere and I never thought that it would reach that far back into the engine. I was more concerned about the life of the Turbo and damaging the oil.

TBH I cant see the heat being that bad for the engine. I have seen the centre branch of my LCB glowing red after a spirited drive (before fitting the wrap). Ive used wrap for about 6 years now and had no adverse effects, I did have to lean off the carb after fitting though which showed another few bananas.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I'm not convinced about the heat ending up in the head. If this was happening then the whole engine temp would increase i.e. your engine would run hotter. the engine temp is regulated by the thermostat, so as long as your cooling system has capacity, this shouldn't be a problem.

Also, can these temperatures actually get hotter than the engine already sees? no. If the temperature of your combustion is X deg then your exhaust can be no hotter, no matter what insulation you have on it. so is it a problem?

Only back-to-back would show any of the above as fact. And only back-to-back testing would show if any gains would be sufficient to accept a reduced life of a manifold etc.

My metro manifold is wrapped as it made changing head gaskets easier with a hot engine at race weekends!!!
