Any idea why the ign light would be on with ign switched off and off with ignition switched on?
Its a ND alternator with switched live conected to correct terminal of alt, ign light connected to correct terminal of alt .

I was over Simons (MadMK1) house yesterday and today, the standard alternator works fine but when we fit the ND one the ign warning light wont work.
We connected it up exactly the same as I did on my car and the same as Jimster has on his car, we even tried my ND on there but it wont work properly.
Very confused, Ive never had troubles with electrics

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

very strange, I'd try connecting a new ignition live to it, sounds like something is a miss with it

Its a brand new alt and we tried mine on it which Ive been running for some years now with no probs.

We used the wires in the car and added a switched live and it didnt work so......
Made a seperate charging system outside the car, incase anything else was interfering with it, and it still didnt work.
Odd thing is I double checked the wiring on my car and its exactly the same, so is Gav Wakelys and I remember Jimster saying he did his the same as mine.
We are stumped. For now we put the standard alt back on so it works, with a view that Simon can fit the ND later when we understand the fault.

Simon - youre welcome mate, nice to meet you and thats a lovely car you have.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

could the alt have a different pinout?

there is some info here if you havent seen it,

Failing that, could the diodes in it be fucked

We have referred to that thread a few times 13.
Theoretacally it couldnt be simpler, you take a white wire from no2 position on ign switch to the ign warning light, brown/yellow from there to the relevant terminal on the alt, then add a switched live to the relevant terminal on the alt. The post terminal goes to battery +ve lead on the solenoid. Easy.........Dont fucking work though.
I do find it odd though that the ign warning lamp effectively makes a switched live going to the alt and then we add another switched live to the alt aswell, but thats what I did on mine and Gavs and they work.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

You could use that spare brown permanent live.
When they built the loom did you tell them you were using the ND alt?
Its possible thats what they did it for.

When i got it made it was for a standard alt not an nd alt. I was thinking that brown was on the plug as i got it from them it had big brown small brown and the brown and yellow to fit the alt

Has your alt worked then hope the devil car has not killed it.

Just checked my alternator on my car and its fucked which means you do have a wiring fault somewhere and you also have a fucked alternator.
Its got to be to do with that cut out switch
