right - im proper pissed off.

My fucking xbox has the stupid 'ring of death' bollocks..

i did hear that i can fix the shit box by wrapping it up turning it on and heating it for 15 mins then letting it cool down and powering it back up.. my guess this is a complete sack of shit and will just wreck it further, so im not keen.

Any ideas or do i drop it in to game or some other place so that can steal my money while they fix it.

I had the 'ring of death', on my first x box after about a year, sent it back to microsoft, fixed it, about 6 months later it got again. Just binned it.

In about april i got another, got the 'ring of death' after about a month.

So i wrapped it with a towel, and it worked, for about a week. Then got the 'ring of death again'.... then i skipped it.

With the current price of Xboxes, is fixing an option? I would guess there wouldn't be much difference between repairing and a new one. As far as I remember, its due to the graphics card overheating so would probably be an expensive fix. Is there no chance of warranty?

3 year warranty - but if its past that, you can fix it yourself properly, with an x-clamp mod. Easy to do and works. (i've done it on mine)

No chance of warranty.. would you believe it i have just had it 3 years!

+ 1 for the ex clamp also stuck a few more fans in mine too and changed some of the thermal compound whilst I had it open.

register it online first dude, mine was way out of warranty and i got it fixed for free

ditto, they even sent me a box to freepost it back to them and had its back to me in 3 weeks fully fixed for free

If i get abit geeky its the chipset that overheats, Generally just from being a shit fan/chipset and coupled with the fact that they normally get shuved in a cabinet with little airflow, they get gobbed up with fluff and dust and overheat.

My mate has done his, popped the chipset off, new thermal compound (basically special copper slip to help heat transferr)

They have now changed to a new chipset (jasper chipset) and its supposed to have sorted the problem...unsure if you can just swap to a jasper from the old one though?

While its open i would do as Stig said and shuv in an extra computer fan or something. Should stop it overheating.

Anyway, the main one was that they have a duty of care//replacement for up to 6 years....

If its a knows issue is should definately be replaced for free.
I know after a certain period it is down to the customer to prove that it broke down not due to normal wear and tear...
I think most people could reasonably expect a console to last around 5 years - I have a feeling that was another point in the list as well... if it isn't fit for purpose or doesn't last a reasonable amount of time then it should be replaced at their expense aswell......

Got the ring of death after 18 months though I'd never registered my Xbox on-line.

Hopped on the Interwebs, stuck in the serial number and printed the pre-paid address label. Sent it to off (Germany no less) and had it back in under a week. It's worth trying to have it done properly, Microsoft need to keep people sweet, otherwise we'd will all bugger off and get PS3s, even if they do look like they belong in the 70s.

yep get in touch with ms they will fix it for free!

jaspers run different voltage so dont think you can just swap them.

they still get hot though and annoyingly noisey

just dont make them like they used to

Repaired mine myself with new bolts and thermal compound, still working ok 12 months later. Quite easy really
