Cones hold car up, dampers keep it from jiggling about. Any noticeable leaks from a damper signal its demise -- you can do a not-terribly accurate test of damper by pulling it off the car, see if it compresses and extends smoothly, try it again fast, it should be more difficult the faster you go. Unfortunately you'll never be able to replicate the car's movements by hand so if it passes these tests it's not necessarily a sign that all is perfect. Cones can collapse, but more usually it's the plastic knuckle cups failing. Duff subframe can cause the rear to sag as well. Graunching noises from dead rear suspension trailing arm pivots can trick you into thinking you've got rubbing or bottoming issues -- they can make some nasty sounds, usually accompanied by wonky handling, snap oversteer, etc.

replace all you dampers mat for some adjustable ones (ie) the ones whith thumb wheel on and just click away till you have what you want ......(AVO) springs to mind

The thing about the doughnuts is they get harder with age, so unless they have collapsed, which would be noticable by lower ride height, then they are likely ok.
