One for the N/A Men
Has Anyone here run a 48 DCOE on a Big bore A series, I have been using the 45 for a few years now with good success but according to Vizard the 45 is out of it's dept post 120-140 hp

I am hoping for the 140 mark out of the 1480 and with the 45 being right on the edge of it flow capacity I am coming around to the thinking that a 48 may be a more suitable carb for my spec

Peoples taught's ?

So what do you think are the benefits of this over the 45??

I know Swiftune use a 48 on their 1460 310cammed engines.

I guess it depends on the rev band. Never seen anyone use one on a 1380.

tbh i've never had a 45 on this engine, i thought it might be over kill but seems to work fine, i'm running a 320 cam with it. i did have it set up with a play mini exhaust on then recently changed to the maniflow mig rear boxes, put it on rollers and was running slightly lean top end. it doesn't seem to be overkill and had no problems

There is a very nice green mini which has been around fr a few years now running a 1380 on a 48 - can't recall the guys name but it was pretty powerful, but you'd need to see dyno numbers and a comparison with a 45 to make your mind up. Mr Wiggys is probably one of the most powerful 5 porters out there and runs a 45 I think, don't know if he's tried a 48 or not?

you are talking yourself into revving that stroker aren't you to make that much go from it.lol!!!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

With Steel crank 3 steel bearing caps 40B rods and Omega pistons I am happy this spec can sustain 7500 rpm on a regular biases if it cant what can IMO,

It will be running a 296 or a 310 so yes it will be a rev'er but thats the way to make power from N/A.

I see your thinking - just don't rev her captain - fingers crossed you get 140 before 7500! I've attached a graph to show piston accel v crank angle for a std stroke 1275 and an 86mm stroke crank - notice the extra accel of the pistons. The really interesting part is the section between 150degs and 210degs, where due to the length relationship between rod and crank the piston actually slows down then speeds up again - non of which is good for engine smoothness or life.

Swifty told me that its difficult to get enough fuel into a 1460, so you end up putting smaller chokes in to limit the air so its not too lean. Whats the point of fitting a 48 if you are fitting small chokes anyway, you wont get any more fuel into it

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Mmm thats very interesting Paul I never came across that type of lean out,

I,m not sure it makes scene tho, surly if a 1460 is consuming more Air then a greater volume of air will be passing trough the Venture as so more fuel will be drawn trough the main jet ?

It would seem very counter productive to put smaller Chokes in to reduce Airflow trough the carburettor when you spend so much time trying to get the head to flow more Air ??

Trouble is you cannot get enough fuel through the main jet for the larger cc, there isnt one available.
The conversation came up because Swifty built me a 1380 and Gav a 1460 at the same time 10 years ago. He put a 45 on each and fitted 40mm chokes in mine and 36mm in Gavs, so I asked him why - that was his answer. The 1380 did 134 bananas and the 1460 did 142.

I seriously doubt it!

Split Weber's? Or is that too much weight?

You could easily make a EFi manifold that will flow more than any Weber.

Plus you then have the advantages of fuel injection.
