A friend of mine is just about to start a new project. He's planning on the car being an uprated mk1 cooper S.

He's interested in ditching the rear subframe in favour of a beam. What are peoples opinions of these? good or bad. Which one should he go for? have seen lots.

Also, has any one had any experiences of Dereks Minis in Willenhall, west mids?

Many Thanks

Ben.

Give Carl a shout. His beam axle is spot on.

My personal opinion is that beams are for race cars or mainy track day cars only.

If weight is the issue then get a hole saw to the rear frame.

im happy with my speedex type ,i welded extra moutings along it to strengthen it ,and its been fine , the ride hieght is to high because the coil overs i got with it are too long ,and the springs are too soft , i really need to upgrade to shorter shocks and harder 125 lb springs ,but overall its been ok .. one thing is ,theres a noticeable increase in interior rd noise if your car is soundproofed .,

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM

Don't worry about the hi jack, It's good to get everyones opinion. Planning on starting my own project soo, which will be just a track car.

The owner to be of the car in question is a bit of a perfectionist, so I know he's gonna be after the best of everything. His thinking behind it was that the beam would neater.

That was my thought, as well as lighter, being titanium and all... Plus you don't have the big ol' subframe all over the back of the car. Maybe providing more room for a fuel pump location for fuel injection, or even just uprating to a better fuel pump... Not a bad price either, 465 pounds, even american, that's a good deal for a bit-o titanium.

Why won't it handle? Too light maybe? I know it's pretty easy to whip the rear end around. Is this a personal experience Nic? A story perhaps...

i hated my rear beam, the shudderfield type, ruined the handling on my cooper, even after lots of trial and error and £££s of different springs
