Need to order new studs and nuts for the van's manifolds.

Do people prefer studs and nuts or are strong bolts better?

Opinions please...

I prefer studs because it makes it alot easier to line up the exhaust manifold. It can take serious cursing and shouting to get the exhaust manifold to line up for bolts

The reason for using studs, is that you won't wear out the threads in the head.

I used bolts this year as I kept having the nuts come loose and if you gave them too much it pulled the thread this was with spring washers. I suppose k nuts would have been a better option but bolts were cheap and easy to source. Using bolts is easy if you put the outer ends in loose first and then fit the rest.

Bolts are my choice Andy.

I have used 16 point 5/16 unf bolts I 'acquired' off an old Rolls-Royce gas turbine !

The bolts have paid absoulte dividends. It means I can leave my manifolds and all four steady bars in place to change the head gasket by removing the head studs and lifting the head vertically off the block. Worked a treat just before the IMM, cut the amount of work down quite a bit when I blew the gasket. It was a bit trickier fitting the exhaust mainfold bolts but it paid off for me.

I completely agree with Vegard on the wear to the threads in the head but its a call I made when deciding on bolts.

I can probably send you 6 of my spare bolts if you'd like them, no cost. I'll see if I have any - let me know.

Richard.

I've ordered new studs and nuts now Richard, but thanks anyway. We want to get the engine in this weekend so we needed to get the last few bits and bobs ordered this morning.

Me Robert?? not sure I know what you mean *blush*

EDIT: Forgive my ignorance, but I can't see why using studs would stop you lifting the head of complete with manifolds etc? They both still hold the same stuff to the head.

Whilst on the subject, has anyone got any info on the size of the bolts needed?

I know turbominivanman said 5/16unf, but anyone got any idea on how long i should order?

I guess that would depend what you are bolting to your head. The turbo manifolds are thicker than the n/a ones, so probably best to measure for yourself.

Yep, as Robert says, I have done the fuckin downpipe clamp and turbo oil drain elbow up more times than I care to mention so for me, leaving the manifolds, turbo and carb in place is a much better idea.

I like the idea of just bolts on the outside Robert, with studs and clearance for such created on the 4 inner fasteners.

Richard.
