Stoke-on-Trent. Duck.

This morning...

I work in an old mill converted to an office - which includes our technical library on a "bridge". 13' high in case the pic's a bit small and you can't see the sign. The French chap in the red coat drives a lorry that was a bit higher than 13' (notice the key word; "was" a bit higher than 13')...

Presumably he thought it was a 13.0m high bridge that merely looked a bit low. Sacrebleu.

Chuckle. Pottsy.

Edit. Cock! Attachments and links won't work! Hang on... (sorted).

I miss imperial measurements.

Far prefer imperial threads than metric....or am I in the minority.

Inches are fine, they are just 25.4 times too large IMO...

Seriously, If I'm measuring a window frame, I'll always use inches. If I'm designing anything that is smaller than a window frame and needs any kind of precision, I use inches....

Nice. I use whatever the specification is in. But for measurements using a tape measure I generally round to the nearest number, be it imperial or metric!

Stoke-on-Trent. Duck.

Thing with inches is, takes me a moment to work out if 5/8 is bigger than 19/32. Whereas calculating if 16 is bigger than 15 is, if I'm honest, easier.

Systems using multiples of 12, 32 and what-have-you seem a bit more complicated than is necessary, but it's worth knowing some of the obvious numbers of course. Such as 13' is less than 4.0m *hehe!*

Cheers for reminding me Rob.

It's amazing how quickly your day can go horribly wrong! Trying to turn a 45' box trailer that's 15' 3" high round a 90 degree bend to line up with the centre of an arch bridge that has a maximum clearance of 15' 3" isn't easy. Or atleast it wasn't for me. I actually contacted about 2-3 feet under the bridge. Got out to look, saw I was too far too the left, reversed back, took a better a line and drove straight through without an issue.

Top tip - always drop all the air out the suspension on your unit and you'll be about 3" lower.

The damage - should polish out!

In my defence, the headboard of the trailer was incorrectly marked (the legal minimum is the height in feet and inches) with two heights in metric 4.60m = 15' 1" and 4.65m = 15' 3". Equally the bridge was marked as 15' 3" and 4.6m. What chance have you got?!

I've still got my job and haven't been disciplined yet.........
