This was the side wall on one of the whisky tankers at work, tyre size is 385/80R22.5, the bulge was like half a football. The tyre fitter didn't want to go any where near it and at 120psi I couldn't blame him!

I only spotted it as I saw the marker light at the rear of the tank flashing on and off as I came out of a roundabout and pulled onto the hard shoulder to check.

That's what you get for fitting cheap re-moulds!

Seen a couple go on the wagons at work when they've driven over kerb pins etc and when they get a blowout you know all about it!

Tyres scare the crap out of me sometimes. I was putting 8 bar in a tiny little 26"X1.5" bike tyre when it let go and it made me temporarily deaf. Just imagining the same on a truck tyre makes me wince

The fitter reckoned it would have lasted about another mile, just enoughto reach a tight 50mph 'S' bend on the M80, not what you want at 44 ton with 32,000 litres moving about in the tank!

When you see how truck tyres are fitted, it's little wonder they get damaged. A sledge hammer is the tool of choice for the last bit of the bead. They also replace them on the trailer so they don't have to wait 30 minutes to re-torque the wheel nuts!

I used to know a truck tyre fitter. His bead breaker of choice was a 4" section of angle iron and a sledge hammer...

We had one not quite that bad on the race truck coming back from france, we noticed it just before we left, but we couldn't get the wheel off, i recon the nuts had rusted themselves in place, i wheel brace and an 8 foot scaffold pole with 4 blokes on it couldn't shift it.

Amyway we had to drive back from france onto the ferry and through kent, worst journey of my life, we were expecting it to explode any minute, fortunately we got back safely.

my dad used to have a clever little torquing machine for these, it was a torque multiplier with a little wheel that 'walked' around the tyre side wall

i used to watch in amazement as a child lol, i really am simple and sad eh?

You must be in the minority of HGV drivers as seem to know what is going on! Most would get loads of satisfaction from having the tyre exploded thus requiring the traffic wombles to come along and close the road etc

I tried to flag a wagon driver down the other day as I could see a dodgy tyre and he just looked at me as if i was an inconvenience! The tyre blew anyway but still!

Not always I don't! I had a guy driving an E Class Merc flashing his lights and blasting his horn at me on the motorway, now I knew I hadn't cut anybody up, so I was thinking what's this clown all about, eventually I pulled over and one of the trailer brakes was binding and the paint on the back plate was on fire. If he hadn't stopped me chances are it could have spread to the tyre and the rest of the trailer. Thing is, when you are travelling the air movement suppresses the flames, when you stop it very quickly gets a lot worse!
